Plainedge is the Community that Families Want to Move To
A Message from Superintendent Dr. Edward A. Salina, Jr.
Newsday recently reported that there has been a bidding war in the Plainedge Schools community. They found that in 2021, our community was the only one in Nassau County to see such competition on homes.

Families want to move to our community because they know that their children will get the best education possible in our schools. Our new Pre-K program has been a success in giving our youngest students a head start on their educational journey. Our exceptional academic programs ensure that our students are able to explore all different types of learning. In the past year, Reem Hamdan was named a semi-finalist in the prestigious Regeneron Science contest and Kyle Arjun Kavully took first place at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair in the Social and Behavioral Science category.

Plainedge is also special because of our focus on our special education students. Our district has developed one of the best Special Education programs on Long Island. We have other districts that regularly pay tuition to send their students to our programs. Our district also believes in supporting the entire family, which is why we hold events for special needs parents, We are hosting a book talk with Massapequa parent and author Debra O'Fee on her life as a parent of a child with Autism, who is the inspiration for her book "I'm Sorry Jimmy Muscles: Why My Son with Autism Wanders." Click here for more information on the book talk.

Plainedge also offers top-notch facilities. This spring, we will be having a ribbon cutting ceremony for our new Middle School courtyard greenhouse. Our Middle Schoolers will be able to learn about plants, soil, and hydroponics. We are nearing the completion of the new High School cafeteria and expect to have it open for our students in early May. Additionally, the Board of Education and Central Administration will be holding a grand opening celebration complete with food and beverages so that we may proudly display the latest facility improvements at the high school. Look for the invite in the coming weeks!

We are in the process of upgrading our softball field, fencing, and dugouts at Schwarting Elementary School. We expect these facility improvements to be complete with all upgrades by mid-April. We will also be holding a groundbreaking event in April to begin work on a new athletic facility at Plainedge High School.

Speaking of athletics, our girls' varsity basketball team made our entire school proud when they won a thrilling victory to become the Nassau County champions. Congratulations to all of our coaches, players and their families. We are now entering the spring sports season. We are looking forward to great things from all our teams.
Plainedge Student Wins First Place at LISEF Fair
Pictured above is Kyle Arjun Kavully
Kyle Arjun Kavully explored public opinion toward racial justice. He believed that instead of a simple societal pro/con attitude toward the idea of racial justice, people actually held very nuanced views toward specific topics associated with racial justice including experiences and perceptions of criminal justice, diversity in the workforce, and even definitions of social progress and equality. He started his research as a junior and collaborated with a researcher from Columbia University's Teachers College by reviewing sociological research and learned how to conduct linear regression modeling. Crucially, our district invested in an account with iRoper, an online repository of leading polls and surveys. Leveraging our district's subscription, Kyle downloaded Pew data on the attitudes listed above -- the data were reliable and this really strengthened Kyle's ability to draw conclusions from the data. Working over the summer and into the fall of 2021, he fine-tuned his regression models and composed the final research paper. Kyle's results indicated that the most important factor that predicted how a person felt toward racial justice issues was that of a person's political ideology and not their race. At the LISEF fair, Kyle engaged judges face-to-face in a presentation and Q&A. His charisma as an actor and the professionalism of his work propelled him to 1st place in the Behavioral Sciences category of the fair. Kyle aspires to pursue a career in constitutional or civil rights law and his research helped solidify his goals. Kyle has been accepted into many prestigious schools. Most recently he has been accepted into the University of Pennsylvania and Brown University, both Ivy League schools. We look forward to seeing where Kyle selects to continue his education.

Elementary School Students Make Blankets for Those Who are Less Fortunate
Dozens of PTA and parent helpers in our schools helped to support each Elementary school class as they made blankets for the less fortunate. Thanks to their hard work, we were able to donate 202 blankets to Project Linus who then partnered with local groups in New York CIty to help bring them to children in need.
