Where Form Meets Function: MEP Design for Shops & Maintenance Garages

As winter approaches and fleets prepare for colder starts, icy roads, and longer repair lists, the importance of well-designed maintenance garages and shops comes into sharp focus.

In this issue, we’re exploring the critical role of MEP systems in keeping these facilities safe, efficient, and ready for anything. From high-performance ventilation to resilient heating systems and smart power distribution, we’ll look at how thoughtful design supports the people and equipment that keep everything moving—no matter the weather.

We hope you enjoy the new look and feel of Plains Talk — with the same reliable content you've come to expect from WPE!

More Than Square Footage
The Systems Behind the Service

Maintenance garages and transportation shops are essential to keeping infrastructure running, and their success depends on more than just square footage and layout. In this article, we explore how integrated MEP systems—like sensor-driven ventilation, radiant heating, emergency power, and specialized plumbing—support safety, efficiency, and code compliance. We also provide insight into how these systems influence spatial planning, material choices, and long-term facility resilience.

Featured Solutions

Sioux Falls Light,
Power & Traffic Building

Sioux Falls is rethinking municipal infrastructure from the ground up. With construction underway on a new 60,000-square-foot facility, the city is consolidating its Light and Power, Traffic Operations, and Engineering Division into a single, high-performance space. Designed for long-term functionality and technical precision, the building features HVAC zoning, radiant heat in truck bays, integrated life safety systems, and coordinated MEP connections—all engineered to meet the evolving demands of modern municipal service.

T.I.P. Rural Electric Cooperative Headquarters

T.I.P. REC recently completed a new headquarters in Brooklyn to better support its expanding operations across central Iowa. Designed to consolidate office, fleet, and infrastructure functions into one efficient facility, the 52,000-square-foot building reflects a practical response to growing service demands and evolving technology—bringing together modern systems, all-electric operation, and purpose-built spaces for long-term utility performance.

Linn County Secondary Roads Maintenance Shops

The Linn County Secondary Roads Department maintains over 1,150 miles of roads and 255 bridges across rural Iowa—an essential service that demands reliable infrastructure and well-equipped facilities.

To support these operations, the County invested in two key projects aimed at improving fleet management and operational efficiency.

Bonus Feature: We're currently working with FEH Design on a new 33,500 SF, $26.7 million Vehicle Maintenance Shop for the South Dakota Army National Guard in Sturgis, SD.

Heinrich Celebrates 25 Years!

Since joining WPE in 2000, Michael Heinrich has become a mechanical powerhouse— now leading the Mechanical Department in Rapid City, with nearly 700 projects and registrations in 11 states. His name comes with a trail of credentials: PE, BEAP, BEMP—ASHRAE-certified in both energy assessment and modeling. But beyond the stamps and specs, Michael’s real legacy is his impact on our culture. He’s a mentor, a teammate, a laugh-you-can-hear-down-the-hall kind of guy—and almost always behind the latest office prank. One of a kind, through and through. Happy anniversary, Michael!
