Planning and Budgeting for Landscape Design

Smart landscape design starts long before the first plant goes into the ground. Careful planning and budgeting not only help create a space that looks great today but also ensures it will thrive for years to come. Here are some key factors to consider when approaching your next landscape project:

  • Plan for Lifespan – Every plant has a natural life expectancy. Some trees and shrubs will last decades, while others may need to be refreshed every few years. Knowing this upfront helps you plan for long-term replacements and upkeep.
  • Think About Size at Maturity – A small sapling today could grow into a 75-foot tree tomorrow. Understanding the full growth potential of plants prevents overcrowding, costly removals, and safety hazards down the road.
  • Match Plants to Light Conditions – Whether your property has full sun, deep shade, or dappled light, selecting plants suited to those conditions is critical for their health and performance.
  • Factor in Maintenance – Some landscapes require ongoing pruning, irrigation, and seasonal care, while others are more self-sustaining. Choose plants and layouts that align with your maintenance budget and capacity.
  • Consider Curb Appeal and Function – Beyond aesthetics, think about how your landscape will function. Will it welcome visitors, provide privacy, or support pollinators? A thoughtful design balances form and purpose.

At Hewson Landscape, we work with commercial clients to plan and budget for landscapes that are not only beautiful and sustainable but also enhance curb appeal and add real value to their properties and investments.

Irises: Divide and Thrive

Irises are a fall favorite, and with proper care, they’ll bloom beautifully year after year. At Hewson Landscape, we make sure your irises stay healthy and vibrant by dividing and replanting them at just the right time.

Late summer to early fall is ideal for this work. Every 3–4 years, we lift the clumps, separate healthy rhizomes, and trim back foliage to prepare the plants for winter. Damaged or diseased pieces are removed to keep your beds strong and thriving.

Once divided, we replant in sunny, well-drained soil, spacing each piece for optimal growth. With proper watering and seasonal care, your irises will continue to flourish year after year.

A little expert attention this fall means lasting color and beauty in your landscape—and Hewson Landscape is here to make it happen.

Selecting Proper Plant Materials

Choosing the right plants is key to long-term landscape success. At Hewson, we recommend selecting materials that are native to Zone 6, since they’re naturally adapted to our climate and soil. Native plants typically require less maintenance, use fewer resources, and have a much higher success rate than non-native varieties.

By incorporating region-appropriate trees, shrubs, perennials, and flowers, your commercial property not only looks its best—it also supports local ecosystems and delivers reliable performance season after season.

Irises are a resilient perennial that brings striking color.

Inkberry Holly is a native shrub that adds structure and year-round greenery.

Red Maple is a hardy shade tree with brilliant fall color.
