You are receiving the bulletin this month as a reminder that current summer pricing for in-person races expires this Sunday, July 26 at 11:59 pm.

Don't forget to visit the Training pages of the IMT Des Moines Marathon website for training guides and resources designed to get your training on track and to get you across the finish line.
COVID-19 Response

The IMT Des Moines Marathon continues to work closely with city and local public health officials involved in the planning of the IMT Des Moines Marathon race weekend.

Our collective priority is the health and safety of residents, participants, and all who come to Des Moines for this event, which continues to be a rapidly
evolving situation.

The IMT Des Moines Marathon is announcing today the addition of virtual race options for a variety of race distances and a two-week window of time to participate in them.

At the same time, we are continuing with plans for in-person events and races, with the exception of the Principal 5K Road Race, which has transitioned to the Principal 5K Virtual Race solely in 2020.

While the final decision for our in-person events is still dependent on the fluid public health situation we are all facing, we continue to work towards a plan based on policies and procedures designed specifically to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Here are some registration reminders as our plan for in-person racing continues so that you can feel comfortable about registering, training, AND participating in the IMT Des Moines Marathon:

  • Event registration for all in-person races remains open.

  • Summer pricing for all event categories expires this Sunday, July 26 at 11:59 p.m. CST.

  • Virtual event options are now being offered with virtual event registration remaining open until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 4, 2020.

In the meantime, the IMT Des Moines Marathon contingency plan offers a variety of race weekend scenarios to ensure that the event will be held securely and within the guidelines set forth by the state of Iowa, Polk County, and the city of Des Moines.

  • Entry fees will not be refunded if in-person races take place or are modified to virtual events.

  • If in-person races do not take place, you have the option of deferring your registration to 2021. (fees may apply)

Again, the IMT Des Moines Marathon is planning for in-person race activities the weekend of October 16-18.

Race Day

The IMT Des Moines Marathon has measured, and is in the process of USATF certification, for an update to our current half marathon course that will start by Principal Park on the MLK JR PKWY bridge and finish on Court Avenue.

We will be making the same course changes to the marathon course for USATF certification purposes, while planning to keep the course route as much the same as possible The marathon course map will be posted once available.

Our policy this year may include but is not limited to: assigned arrival times with rolling wave starts, self-serve water stations at fewer locations, encouraging you to carry your nutrition/supplements, limited spectator areas, an established clear zone at the finish line, and limited post-race festivities.

For more information and FAQ's as to what race day and the start line may look like, visit the COVID-19 Response page of the website. Click here .
