June Bulletin

Thank you for subscribing to the IMT Des Moines Marathon bulletin or participating in one of the IMT Des Moines Marathon races in the past.

You are receiving the bulletin this month as a reminder that current spring pricing remains in effect through Father's Day, June 21.

Besides the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon races, the October 16 to 18 weekend of events includes the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo, MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series, MercyOne 5-Mile Run & 1-Mile Walk, MercyOne Children's Hospital Kids Run, Principal 5K Road Race, and the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay.
COVID-19 Update

The IMT Des Moines Marathon is scheduled to be held as planned.

Within the past month, the mayor of Des Moines and governor of Iowa have provided guidelines for the return of events that will allow for mass gatherings in 2020 as the state of Iowa continues to reopen. As your race director, I am working diligently to put together a plan for in-person racing that not only meets, but exceeds these guidelines.

While the final decision for a safe and healthy event is still dependent on the fluid public health situation we are all facing, I now have the ability to plan the IMT Des Moines Marathon events based on policies and procedures designed specifically to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at our event.

As of today, these plans include an in-person packet pick-up, expo, and speaker series, as well as the full schedule of weekend races that look out for your best interests and longevity, along with those of our volunteers, vendors, and community.

Here are some registration reminders as our plan for in-person racing continues so that you can feel comfortable about registering, training, AND participating in the IMT Des Moines Marathon:

  • Event registration remains open.

  • The extension of spring pricing for all event categories expires this Sunday, June 21 at 11:59 p.m. CST.

  • Event categories will return to the standard fee structure starting Monday, June 22 with the next fee increase to take place Sunday, July 19 at 11:59 p.m.

  • A virtual event option is still being considered, however, unlikely. Details will be announced should a virtual event option become viable. Here are the results from the May bulletin athlete poll asking if you would like to see a virtual event option offered in 2020:
  • 44% no, but thank you for asking.
  • 32% yes, in addition to the in-person event.
  • 24% yes, but only if the in-person event cannot take place as planned.

In the meantime, the IMT Des Moines Marathon contingency plan offers a variety of race weekend scenarios to ensure that the event will be held in a safe manner and within the guidelines set forth by the state of Iowa and the city of Des Moines.

  • If modifications are made, and if those modifications don’t meet your needs as an athlete, you would have the option to opt-out of this year’s event (fees may apply) and defer your paid registration to 2021.

  • However, race entry fees will not be refunded if the in-person event takes place, is modified, or is canceled in 2020.

Again, the IMT Des Moines Marathon is planning for in-person race activities the weekend of October 16-18.

Packet Pick-Up

The Iowa Events Center, home to packet pick-up, has returned to 100% capacity and is taking steps to ensure a safe and clean environment as events begin returning indoors.

Policies and procedures for all of us may include but are not limited to; extended packet-pick up days and/or hours of operation, picking up your own athlete packet, self-testing prior to the event, staying home if feeling sick, encouraging at-risk populations to not attend with you, onsite temperature screening at the entrance, face-coverings and gloves required/provided where necessary for all volunteers, vendors, and staff, face-coverings encouraged for all participants, hand sanitizer stations, and reminders to wash hands frequently.
Race Day

Policies and procedures for running events may or may not change come October as well, but for now, contingency plans follow guidelines for the staging, start line, course, finish line, and post-race areas on race day.

Some of these options that are being considered include but are not limited to: changing the location of the start line while keeping the existing course(s) and finish line on Court Avenue intact, assigned wave start times and arrivals, re-configuring services that may not allow for social distancing on the course such as self-serve water stations, entertainment, and post-race activities after crossing the finish line.

The overall goal of the IMT Des Moines Marathon is to offer the same race weekend atmosphere and experience that we have come accustomed to over the year. It is an honor to be listed as one of the Top 20 marathons in the country by BibRave. We will strive this year to also be known as one the safest marathons in the country.
IMT DMM Athlete Poll
Guidelines for social distancing at running events at this time include the course as well as the start and finish line areas.

While we may all be getting used to staying 6 feet apart from one another, we want to hear from you and your thoughts on social distancing during the race itself as we continue to plan for 2020.
Are you willing to maintain a social distance of 6 ft. from other athletes while on the course?
Yes, I will follow all guidelines laid out by the event as how to pass others.
Yes, at the start line, but not on the course should I want to pass an athlete.
No, but thank you for asking.
RRCA Athlete Survey
The RRCA has released the Return to Running response results related to participation in running events as well as locally organized group runs and training programs this fall.

More than 10,500 responses were recorded from all 50 states. “The overarching theme from the survey is that runners are concerned about the public health officials’ guidelines and recommendations for physical distancing followed by their community’s infection/death rates and trends,” according to the results.

The IMT DMM procedures for a safe and clean event will incorporate athlete response when possible. For complete survey results. Click here .
Slow the Spread

The CDC guidelines to help protect Americans during the global COVID-19 outbreak are aimed at helping slow the virus’ spread and keep our most high-risk populations safe:

  • Listen to and follow the directions of your state and local authorities.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially after touching frequently used items or surfaces.

  • Avoid touching your face.

  • Sneeze or cough into a tissue, or the inside of your elbow.

  • Disinfect frequently used items and surfaces as much as possible.

  • Strongly consider using face coverings while in public, and particularly when using mass transit.

These guidelines build on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s general recommendations to help prevent the spread of the virus
