May Bulletin
Greetings!

Thank you for subscribing to the IMT Des Moines Marathon bulletin or participating in one of the IMT Des Moines Marathon races in the past.

You are receiving the bulletin this month as a reminder that current spring pricing remains in effect through Father's Day, June 21.

Besides the IMT Des Moines Marathon & Half Marathon races, the October 16 to 18 weekend of events includes the Scheels Sports & Fitness Expo, MidAmerican Energy Speaker Series, MercyOne 5-Mile Run & 1-Mile Walk, MercyOne Children's Hospital Kids Run, Principal 5K Road Race, and the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay.
COVID-19 Update

The IMT Des Moines Marathon is scheduled to be held as planned!

As your race director, and a runner myself, I have empathy for the concern and confusion that you may be experiencing about the fall running event schedule. Many of us have had a race that we registered and trained for this spring canceled or postponed, and that trend is now pushing into the summer. We are all anxious to return to races … but when and what will they look like?

According to the RRCA Return to Running Survey, athlete attitudes and perceptions vary ( click here ) but for the most part athletes are cautiously optimistic about returning to road races this fall. Within the industry we are looking for the appropriate guidelines and procedures to follow as we begin to return to running in groups and executing events.

As plans are dependent on the evolving public health situation, I offer the following contingency plan that looks out for your best interests and longevity. This plan provides options so that you can feel comfortable about registering, training, AND participating in the IMT Des Moines Marathon, while we continue planning.

As of May 21, the IMT Des Moines Marathon registration policy for the 2020 event has been expanded to include:

  • Event registration remains open. Spring pricing for all events has been extended a final time through Father’s Day, June 21.

  • A virtual event option is being considered in 2020. Details will be announced as soon as a virtual event option becomes viable.

In the meantime, we are considering a variety of race weekend scenarios to ensure that the event will be held in a safe manner and within the guidelines for mass gatherings. Some of these options include but are not limited to: Reducing the number of days and events, changing the distance(s) and course(s), limiting pre-race and post-race gatherings, no bag/gear check, capping the number of athletes, restricting spectator access, etc.

  • If modifications are made, and if those modifications don’t meet your needs as an athlete, you would have the option (fees may apply) to opt-out of this year’s event and defer your paid registration to 2021.

  • However, race entry fees will not be refunded if the in-person event takes place, is modified, or is canceled in 2020.

Every month I am (virtually) meeting with the City of Des Moines street use team and am conducting a review of our risk assessment plans. Should we not be allowed to execute the 2020 event as planned and we have to cancel the event you will be informed immediately. Otherwise, I will continue to communicate with you through the event bulletin, website, and social media channels.

Again, the IMT Des Moines Marathon is planning for in-person race activities the weekend of October 16-18.

Slow the Spread

The White House Coronavirus Task Force guidelines to help protect Americans during the global Coronavirus outbreak are aimed at helping slow the virus’ spread and keep our most high-risk populations safe:

  • Listen to and follow the directions of your state and local authorities.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially after touching frequently used items or surfaces.

  • Avoid touching your face.

  • Sneeze or cough into a tissue, or the inside of your elbow.

  • Disinfect frequently used items and surfaces as much as possible.

  • Strongly consider using face coverings while in public, and particularly when using mass transit.

These guidelines build on the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s general recommendations to help prevent the spread of the virus

Athlete Survey
The RRCA has released the Return to Running response results related to participation in running events as well as locally organized group runs and training programs this fall.

More than 10,500 responses were recorded from all 50 states. “The overarching theme from the survey is that runners are concerned about the public health officials’ guidelines and recommendations for physical distancing followed by their community’s infection/death rates and trends,” according to the results.

The IMT DMM procedures for a safe and clean event will incorporate athlete response when possible. For complete survey results. Click here .
Athlete Poll
Many of this year's spring and summer races have pivoted to a virtual event option as a replacement for their cancelled in-person event.

We are considering the viability of a virtual event option, whether it be offered in place of or in addition to, the in-person event as planned.

We want to hear from you as we continue to plan for 2020 ...
Would you like to see a virtual event option offered in 2020?
Yes, but only if the in-person event cannot take place as planned.
Yes, in addition to the in-person event so that I may select one or the other.
No, but thank you for asking.

Save Those Shoes
Iowa Homeless Youth Centers needs your help gathering lightly worn, used and new athletic shoes. And, now is the perfect time to hang on to them until we can begin collecting donations once again at IHYC and participating running stores.

From these sites, shoes will be collected and sold to Sneakers4funds to be re-purposed, re-used, or recycled by local merchants in developing countries. All proceeds raised will benefit IHYC to provide new shoes, clothing, and items for starting a new job . Click here .

IMT "Be Worry Free"
IMT Insurance encourages our employees and Independent Insurance Agents to experience the magic of the IMT Des Moines Marathon weekend. For the past few years, a unique IMT relay team has been having fun and making memories along the route.

“Over the years, I have also done dozens of other races and still find the excitement that this race generates on an October weekend in Des Moines to be special. The race organization and route are outstanding, the weekend atmosphere is vibrant and the spectators across all the neighborhoods provide enthusiastic support.

IMT’s Randy Peter has coordinated the Bankers Trust Marathon Relay Team since by assembling IMT agents from Minnesota and employees from the West Des Moines office.
From my perspective, this relay generates more fun and adventure than a standard golf outing or a team building exercise for any group. The relay adds another layer to the weekend with the coordination and camaraderie leading to laughs, friendship and memories - truly a twist on what is an otherwise individual endeavor.”

“I’ve been running with the IMT relay team for about four years. The Bankers Trust Marathon Relay is a fun and very scenic run. What I enjoy most about the event is getting together with everyone on my team and getting the opportunity to run a different leg of the relay each year. For those considering coordinating a relay team, know that the IMT Des Moines Marathon is a very fun group event.”
