Dear Community Member,

Our community has been deeply impacted by the Spokane Complex Fire. If you are directly impacted by loss and evacuation, please know that our hearts are with you. The City of Spokane has compiled a list of information and City services to help you navigate this difficult time, which can be found on the Wildfire Information page.

The City will continue to update the Wildfire Information page with resources for those impacted by the fire, frequently asked questions about city services, ways to help, cleanup efforts, and information on rebuilding as it becomes available.

PlanSpokane 2046 has reached a significant milestone, thanks to the countless community members who have engaged with the Comprehensive Plan Update. While we work together as a community in the face of the Spokane Complex Fire, we are also navigating the future of our City.

A formal public comment period for the PlanSpokane 2046 Future Land Use Map and updated draft Comprehensive Plan is underway, however an end date to the period has not yet been set in recognition of the need for additional time. Instead, materials are currently available for community members interested in reviewing and a deadline will be announced once determined.

Future Land Use Map StoryMap

Land Use is a technical designation that informs what uses can be built where. Each property within the City of Spokane is designated a Land Use to inform what uses are compatible next to each other and to ensure the right mix of residential, commercial, and industrial uses to support a thriving city and economy. 

The Future Land Use Map (also known as FLUM) identifies the mix of uses desired for the next 20 years.

The Future Land Use Map StoryMap includes an interactive map, where community members can zoom into specific properties and leave direct, location-based comments. Additionally, each neighborhood has been turned into a slide image that allows viewers to compare the existing Land Use designations, as converted to the new Land Use scheme, against what is proposed.

Community members are encouraged to review the draft map and provide feedback, including recommendations, support, or concerns.

Comprehensive Plan Explorer Now Available

An interactive Comprehensive Plan Explorer is now available. This interactive dashboard allows members of the public to search all of the goals and policies found within the draft Comprehensive Plan by Chapter, key words, theme, or whether it is new or existing. This tool is a companion to, not a replacement of, the draft Chapters and does not include introductions, maps, graphics, or other important content.

PlanSpokane at City Council Study Session

PlanSpokane 2046 presented at the June 23 City Council Study Session, providing an update on community participation and presenting the draft Future Land Use Map. Watch the Study Session recording. 

Help BUILDSpokane With Us

The BUILDSpokane code modernization project presented at the July 23 City Council Study Session, providing an update and discussing upcoming public engagement. Watch the presentation below and look out for upcoming ways to provide feedback on how to reflect community values and help the City of Spokane achieve its long-term goals.

Planning Staff Tour Second Harvest

Last month, members of the Planning and Economic Development Services toured Second Harvest, learning about their operations and impact on our local community. Below is a word from Second Harvest about their volunteer opportunities!  

Join Second Harvest’s crew of hunger-fighting heroes today.

Second Harvest is the food bank for food banks across Spokane and the entire Inland Northwest. Fueled by volunteers, Second Harvest distributed nearly 42 million pounds of food over the last year – the equivalent of 18 semitruck loads a week!

You can volunteer to help close the meal gap. Sort fresh produce donated by Washington farmers, pack Bite2Go weekend food bags for schoolchildren in need, or chip in at a Mobile Market to share food with people facing hunger.

Signing up is easy. Visit the Second Harvest website to find an opportunity that fits your schedule. Individuals are welcome, or you can team up with a spouse, friend, or even a group. Large groups should contact Savannah via email or phone.

"Our generous volunteers make healthy food available to neighbors in need," said Second Harvest CEO Jason Clark. “We’d love to welcome you.”

Reminder: New Spokane City Council Meeting Days 

Spokane City Council changed meeting days! If you have ever attended, watched, or planned to speak at a Spokane City Council meeting, this affects you. Here is the new schedule:

• Council Agenda Review Meetings are on Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
• Council Committee Meetings are on Tuesdays at 1 p.m.
• Council Legislative Sessions are on Wednesdays at 6 p.m.

What Happened?

• July 8 Public Workshop: This workshop of the Spokane Plan Commission was cancelled. 
• July 22 Public Workshop: The Spokane Plan Commission discussed Design Review in the Comprehensive Plan and heard an update on the PlanSpokane 2046 Future Land Use Map and the BUILDSpokane code modernization project. [watch 7.22.26 recording]
• August 12 Public Workshop: The regular Plan Commission meeting scheduled was cancelled due to the ongoing response to the Spokane Complex Fire. 

What's Next?

• Wednesday, Aug. 24 Public Workshop: This Spokane Plan Commission meeting is tentatively scheduled for presentations related to the 6-year Capital Improvement Program (CIP), PlanSpokane 2046 Periodic Update, and BUILDSpokane code modernization project. The agenda may change due to the ongoing response to the Spokane Complex Fire.
