Dear Community Member,

Looking for some summer reading?

The City of Spokane is seeking public comments on the draft Chapters of the Comprehensive Plan out for public review. These drafts have been updated based on legislative requirements, community engagement, public comments, and direction from the Spokane Plan Commission.

Community members are welcome to select the topics that most match their interests or dive into the full document. Questions and comments can be sent at any time to PlanSpokane@spokanecity.org. The public is encouraged to include the Chapter name and Goal/Policy number(s) as applicable.

An additional release is expected later this summer, which will include all Chapters and their relevant maps and graphics, along with potential language updates based on feedback received from now until that release.

Visit the Chapter Review webpage for more information, including the draft Chapters.

The City of Spokane is undertaking a comprehensive update to the Spokane Development Code to modernize the City’s regulatory framework, align development regulations with current policy objectives, streamline and support development and redevelopment, promote affordability, equity, and sustainability, and improve transparency and efficiency in the review of proposed development. Learn more about the project, what’s happened so far, and what’s next.

What is the Spokane Development Code and what does it do?

The Spokane Development Code is a set of regulations that govern development within the community, outlining rules for allowed uses, building standards, subdivision of land, and other elements of the built environment. It affects both the what and the how of what can be built within the city, including building setbacks, height limitations, lot coverage, and landscaping requirements.

Once development regulations are adopted, projects that meet those standards are approved to be built. Because of this, community members are encouraged to provide feedback during the writing of these rules, even before they may see development happening.

Learn more and stay involved by visiting the project page for updates and materials, and keep an eye out for future opportunity to participate in the process.

Division TOD Draft Plan Now Available

This June, the City of Spokane, Spokane County, and the Spokane Transit Authority together released a public draft of the Division Street Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Plan. The plan presents options for new approaches to development, land use, and public space along Division Street to make the most of upcoming investments in premium transit service, to be completed through the Division Street Bus Rapid Transit project.

As freight and heavy vehicle traffic shifts from Division Street with the planned opening of the North Spokane Corridor within the next 5-10 years, the plan envisions options to support the Division Street corridor as a community gateway at key transit stations.

Over the next three months, the City of Spokane Plan Commission and City Council will review the plan and consider adopting the document by resolution to help inform future land use, zoning, and infrastructure investment decisions.

City Asks for Feedback on Design Concepts for Spokane Falls Blvd.

Spokane Falls Boulevard serves as a key downtown corridor, connecting businesses, hospitality and entertainment visitors, and regional transportation routes. It serves as the front porch to Riverfront Park and supports community events for thousands of people every year. As the City continues to plan for future reconstruction of the corridor, community input will fine-tune concepts that balance safety, mobility, access, and the economic vitality of downtown Spokane.
