This month we have had the opportunity to celebrate Earth Day and reaffirm our commitment to a greener department. Last week on April 22nd, we held our second Dragons' Den with the theme “DFM Dragons’ Den Clinic Goes Green”. I want to thank all three presenters for their excellent work and extend my sincere congratulations to the winning team, “Let’s cut the paper: A novel, safe, and sustainable way to clean examination tables”, led by the DFM’s Dr. Curtis Lavoie and Nathan Chiarlitti, a fourth-year med student at uOttawa who will be beginning his residency in family medicine at our Winchester site this July. I would also like to give a warm welcome to our new cohort starting their residency with us. I hope the next two years fulfill and inspire you as family doctors. Lastly , please remember to register for our upcoming events, including the Spring Faculty Development Day on Friday, May 13, and plan to attend our Faculty Orientation on Friday, June 10th. In-person events have been reenergizing, and it’s been lovely seeing the faces of this community.

UNDERGRADUATE
The undergraduate fourth-year medical students had their CaRMS match results on April 12th, 2022. Congratulations to all our students, and good luck with your residency!
Our medical students had their annual virtual Choosing Wisely conference. I was invited to present suggestions linked to family medicine. It was a great evening, and thank you to the group for the invitation.
At the DFM Faculty retreat, we had the opportunity to discuss innovations to promote family medicine as a specialty of choice for learners. We had wonderful suggestions from the Faculty present. Our next steps will include putting into action some of those important ideas. Thank you all for your ideas, and don't forget to reach out if you have other suggestions.

POSTGRADUATE
2022 Community Retreat
Last having been held in 2019, the Community Retreat in Wakefield made its return in March. The last two years took its toll on the Community Unit, as preceptors who already work in separate locations across Ottawa were siloed by the pandemic. Dr. Robin Kennie’s top priority for 2022 was to begin Reconnecting in person. Informative, interactive, and exciting sessions were led by Dr. Leonard Bloom,
Dr. Christiane Kuntz, Dr. Robin Kennie and Dr. Eric Wooltorton at the retreat. Stories were read, teaching strategies were shared, and games were played to tackle the issues surrounding isolation. Many of the attendees noted they were delighted to reconnect with their colleagues in-person and just have a moment to relax. Ultimately, the retreat was a hit, and we look forward to seeing those who were unable to attend next year in March 2023!
PGY3 Enhanced Skills Programs
The PGY3 Enhanced Skills program underwent an accreditation external review in the fall and was successful in satisfying all criteria to be reviewed at the next accreditation cycle.
The enhanced skills programs received 224 applicants for our 12 programs. We completed our match in December and we will be welcoming 22 new residents in July 2023.
