Talk, Sing and Point

Life can be a musical with your child! Using a playful sing-song voice can keep your baby’s attention as they are learning language and developing in the first few years. Babies learn language from the very beginning, so the more you talk, sing and point, the better! Everything can be a song from getting dressed to making dinner! Try pointing to objects or holding them up when you are talking to help your child make connections. Your child will be your biggest fan no matter what your level of singing ability! You are your baby's first teacher!

As their child's first playmate, parents promote an infant’s early learning and play skills development. When parents provide continuous moments of meaningful play with their little ones, they are building strong bonds of love and attachment, and helping them to feel safe and confident to explore and learn. This lays the foundation for learning and play for the preschool and school age years. Here are several resources for parents to engage with their infants while promoting their learning and play skills development:

Plan a well-child visit

Well-child visits are important for keeping children healthy, especially in the earliest years when children are growing rapidly. A well-child visit includes a complete physical exam. At this exam, the health care provider checks the child’s physical, social and emotional development to find or prevent problems. Even if a child is healthy, well-child visits are a good time to focus on a child’s wellness. Here are some resources to learn more:

  • Well visits help keep children healthy so they can play, learn, and grow! Check out these tips to help any visit go more smoothly.
  • This Sesame Street video will help your children learn what to expect when they visit the doctor. Try role-playing a checkup; take turns being doctor or nurse!
  • Strong communication among a child’s health team enables doctors and nurses to get the information they need to give the best treatment. This resource offers tips to share with families when communicating with health care providers.
A family watching a fireworks display

4th of July safety tips for the whole family

Fourth of July celebrations often include fireworks displays lighting up the night sky, creating memories for children and adults alike. You may be eager to take the whole family to enjoy the beauty of these displays, but before you do, consider the age of your child and family friendly alternatives to celebrate. Young children may be fearful of the loud sudden sounds that are synonymous with fireworks. Keep safety in mind, particularly with young children, and keep fireworks away from them.
