TOOLS FOR FUTURE PLANNING

Planning ahead for the future is one of the most important steps a family can take to protect a loved one with a disability. Here are just a few ways we're helping families look ahead:

  • In partnership with the Jewish Free Loan Association, we're working on a pilot program to help families enrolled in our Future Funded Special Needs Trust construct Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), to help expand housing options that allow adults with disabilities to live more independently while remaining close to family and community supports. The pilot would offer zero-interest, zero-fee loans of up to $40,000 to help cover pre-construction, construction, or post-construction costs for ADUs, while JLA Trust staff assists families in identifying additional state funding opportunities. You can reach out to us if you're interested in learning more.

  • We loved "Please Don't Do This To The People You Love", an article on practical estate planning from Modern Loss, a newsletter focusing on grief. It's easy -- too easy, really -- to push off the planning around our own deaths, especially when it's something that feels far away. But doing nothing is a decision, too, and it often puts our loved ones in a bad spot. We've seen the results of this quite a few times at JLA Trust, which is why we're always saying "hope is not a plan!"

  • And, of course, you can always join us for our upcoming webinar on government benefits and special needs trusts... more info on that just below!

CLIENT VALENTINE'S PARTY

In February, our staff hosted a Valentine's party for our clients! We're a person-centered organization, and we talk to clients by phone or email all day long... but it's wonderful to have the chance to connect face-to-face every so often, play some trivia, get to know each other, and eat a bit of chocolate. Until next time!

OUR NEW LOOK

Our website just got a makeover to go with our new logo. Same great information, bright new look. Take a look!

BENEFICIARY FEATURE

Long-time JLA Client Mark believes in keeping life positive. One of his personal philosophies is that people deserve respect until they prove otherwise. “All women are ladies, and all men are gentlemen until proven otherwise,” he says. “Sometimes the proof comes right away, sometimes it takes awhile.” Just as important to him is the idea that kindness is a strength, not a weakness.

Originally from Los Angeles, Mark spent his childhood in Park La Brea before moving with his family to Encino Hills in the middle of second grade. Raised Catholic, he chose Saint Felix, the patron saint of luck and happiness, as his confirmation saint. He believes his patron saint has helped guide him towards making the right choice in quite a few situations, saving him some grief.

As a young man, Mark worked as a waiter in Beverly Hills at the once-famous Bistro Garden, a hotspot during the 1980s. Later, Mark he became a high-flying, heavy-hitter for the sales team at the Daily News. But a freeway accident changed his life. Debris from a crash shattered his collarbone and caused severe injuries, including nerve damage in his arm and a concussion that affected him for years. Although he pushed himself to return to work, the lasting effects of the accident eventually led him to apply for disability benefits.

These days, Mark lives in an apartment overlooking Ventura Boulevard. With his rent and bills paid by his trust, funded by his inheritance from his mother, he's able to live modestly off his social security. He enjoys baking desserts like coconut vanilla lemon bars and honey vanilla cornbread, playing poker with friends, and staying active. He takes long walks, and exercises carefully around the nerve damage. “I’ve got a nice little world,” Mark says. "I walk around and I talk to people." What more can you really ask for?
