In 2014, a trend in calls from people who did not require an ambulance prompted Plano Fire-Rescue to collaborate with local hospitals. Together they developed a better way to manage these patients through a new Community Paramedic Program. On Oct. 3, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) will recognize the Community Paramedic Program with a Community Health & Safety Award. The award recognizes local government programs that demonstrate innovation, excellence and success in safety, health and wellness, including enhancement in the quality of life for the disadvantaged.
Today the Community Paramedic Program includes all adult hospitals within Plano’s city limits. Through the program, skilled paramedics make scheduled visits to residents to provide care and follow-up in cases of chronic medical conditions and more, reducing the need to call for an ambulance. The hospitals and insurance systems provide funding. This prevents a budgetary impact on the City and ensures long-term financial sustainability for the program.
ICMA officials say through the Community Paramedic Program, Plano is setting the standard for innovation, effectiveness and creativity.
