Major items approved during the Jan. 23 City Council Meeting were:
Police and Fire-Rescue Equipment
The City is purchasing $6.5 million in equipment under a cooperative purchasing program allowing Plano to piggyback on another local government’s contract. A new command center will replace the 20-year-old unit that Plano Police Department uses at community events, crime scenes and critical incidents. A ladder truck and three pumper trucks for Plano Fire-Rescue are scheduled to be replaced in FY2024-25. Due to a 24-month build period, these units must be ordered now to arrive on time. Delaying the purchase of this equipment would only increase maintenance costs and reduce re-sale value.
Starlight and Sunrise Parks at Collin Creek
Two parks with the Collin Creek Development are officially named. The Block O park on the west side of the development is now named Starlight Park at Collin Creek. Block Y park on the east side is now Sunrise Park at Collin Creek. The names were recommended to City Council by an appointed committee which is required by city policy.
McDermott Road Water Valve
An emergency replacement of a 36-inch water valve was necessary in December. During the summer, staff discovered the broken valve was restricting flow to the west side of the City. The repair was completed in December when water demands were low enough that the pipe could be taken out of service. The existing valve was 25 years old.
Under an existing contract with the North Texas Municipal Water District, the District owns, operates and maintains this portion of the waterline while the City is responsible for the costs associated with operation and maintenance. That contract includes a contingency fund of up to $75,000 for unexpected or extraordinary operation and maintenance expenses which had a balance of $56,045.75. An additional payment of $200,000 was made to the NTMWD to cover the costs associated with the valve replacement. Any unused funds will remain in the contingency fund or be reimbursed to the City.
Annual Audit Findings
City Council was presented the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR) for Fiscal Year 2022. The ACFR is a complete audit made by a licensed public accountant as required by city charter. Read the report.
