Buckle up and prepare for Plano and Frisco ISD students to head back to school on Wednesday, Aug. 9. School zones will be activated to help children walk, ride, drive or bike safely to school. Within Plano city limits, 173 school zones support almost 100,000 students. Please use extra care and be alert as you approach schools along your route.
Over 70 school crossing guards serve primarily at intersections adjacent to 43 elementary schools campuses. When using crosswalks with adult crossing guards:
- Be alert for traffic – drivers sometimes fail to obey the crossing guard stop signs.
- Don't ride bicycles or skateboards across the street – walk them.
- Don't run across the street – always walk.
- Obey the directions of the crossing guard.
If your child rides a bike to school this year, brush up on your bicycling safety knowledge:
- Always ride single file and watch for opening car doors.
- Wear a bicycle helmet.
- Be sure the roadway is clear before entering.
- If you must ride your bike at night, make sure your headlight and reflectors are in good condition.
- Keep your bicycle in good mechanical condition (tires, chain and brakes).
- Obey all traffic rules and signs – always give proper hand signals.
- Ride without passengers. Most bicycles are built to carry one person – YOU.
- Select the safest route to your destination and use it. Avoid busy intersections.
- Walk your bike across busy intersections by using the push button to activate the pedestrian signal.
- Yield the right of way to pedestrians.
Stop for the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon on Alma Road
When the lights flash red at the pedestrian hybrid beacon on Bluebonnet Trail on Alma Road between Spring Creek Parkway and Legacy Drive, stop. Clark High School students often take this trail to school. The light is activated by a button, slow when it is yellow and stop when it is red. Please help us keep walkers, runners and bikers safe at this crossing. This is Plano’s first and only pedestrian hybrid beacon. Watch the video to understand how it works.
Make it a great, safe school year!
