Water Rate Increases Nov. 1
During the budget process, a water rate increase from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) was passed along to Plano's residential and non-residential customers. That increase is effective Nov. 1.

T he average Plano resident uses 11,770 gallons of water per month, which would raise the bill by $1.04 at the new rate.

The most common residential rate changes are below:

Reduce Outdoor Watering to Once a Week Starting Nov. 1
Dial back on landscape watering and save on your water bill. Lawns and outdoor plants require much less watering as we roll into colder temperatures.

Whether you are a resident or a business, please shift to the winter watering schedule on Friday, Nov. 1. Limit sprinkler use to once-a-week. If the last digit of your address is odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9), your water day is Tuesday. If the digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8), your water day is Thursday. Follow these additional guidelines:
  • Turn off automatic sprinklers. Once cooler weather arrives, most grasses go dormant until spring which reduces your lawn's need for water. Subscribe to WaterMyYard for customized weekly watering recommendations.
  • Set your sprinklers to run between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. This is when the temperature is warmer.
  • Don't plant cool season grasses. Ryegrass and fescues require extra water during winter.
  • Avoid excessive water runoff and watering during rain, ice or snow. Runoff is prohibited because it leads to dangerous icing of streets and sidewalks.
  • Only water if your lawn needs it. Just because it is your day to water doesn't mean you must water.

These guidelines apply until March 31, 2020.
Ask About Recycling During the Next Plano Town Hall
Have questions about residential trash and recycling in Plano? Our panel from trash and recycling, and Live Green in Plano explains the challenges we're facing and how you can help. Ask questions on Thursday, Nov. 7, 7-8 p.m. during the Plano Town Hall

With questions already coming in, this is shaping up to be a great conversation. We look forward to hearing from you.
Drive up and Drop off Unwanted Items at Texas Recycles Day
Before you toss your too-small clothes, old eyeglasses or kid’s bicycle, donate them at Texas Recycles Day on Saturday, Nov. 16, 8:30 a.m.-noon. Just drive through and drop off items for partnering local organizations and nonprofits.

Two new organizations are joining us this year. This Side UP! Family, a nonprofit helping families transition from surviving to thriving, is collecting winter coats and jackets for families in need. Plano West's Floral Design class is gathering vases, floral containers, ribbon and homecoming craft supplies for students to upcycle while continuing to learn and nurture their creativity.

We also accept used bicycles, yarn, prom dresses, books, clothing, housewares, medical equipment, pet supplies and sporting goods. Before you arrive, please sort your items into categories so we can keep the line moving quickly.

Don’t forget about your electronics! If it has ever used a plug or batteries, it can be recycled at this event. A cash-only fee is required for some items. Learn more about additonal electronic recycling opportunities at plano.gov/electronics.

Bring two boxes of documents for FREE paper shredding. No commercial documents, please.

A special thank you to Chase Oaks Church for sharing their parking lot at 281 Legacy Drive.
Strike a Pose to Get Your Pet Home
Is your phone filled with photos of your favorite family pet? Put those photos to good use with Finding Rover facial recognition technology. Every dog and cat that enters the Plano Animal Shelter is now registered on Finding Rover. This web program allows users to search for missing pets or to post found pets. Our shelter uses Finding Rover to reunite lost pets with their owners and help adoptable pets find homes.

Every dog and cat leaving the Plano shelter, through a reunion or an adoption, remains protected. The pet parent must remember to register on Finding Rover with the same email address that's on file with the shelter to continue that protection. If that dog or cat ever gets lost, their record is already in the system for quick identification.

Finding Rover registration is FREE. Just go to FindingRover.com and:
  1. Select “Register My Pet” on the top right
  2. Upload your pet’s photo
  3. Provide a few details about your pet
  4. Enter your name, email address and ZIP code

Once pets are registered with Finding Rover, they’re protected for life.
