Questions About Soil --

Members Ask, We Have Answers!

We receive many great questions and this one comes up often:

How often should I change the soil in my containers?

We posed the question to our Skokie/Evanston Plant Club leader, Mary Jaminski, a horticulturalist who also has a tremendous garden of her own..

*******

I have found that in my large 20-24" deep containers, the roots only grow about half way down (12").

When I remove the spent plants in the fall, I try to remove as much of the planting mix from the roots as possible and add this to my perennial garden.

I leave the planting mix that remained in the container.

Then in the spring, I slowly re-fill the container with fresh potting mix. Using my trowel, I incorporate the new and old potting mix in the container. I use fresh potting mix as I plant the container to fill in the gaps.

Plants Make a Great Gift!

A gift of a certificate for garden plants is a great gift. It is personal and practical at the same time, and you don't even need to know the recipient's size or favorite color! Best yet, no one who loves to garden ever said "I have enough plants!"

Give a gift of plants to a friend or neighbor, or a new homeowner who doesn't know where to start and has a new yard.

North Shore Plant Club gift certificates are easy to give and fabulous to get. And because they let the recipient choose exactly the plants they want, this gift is a thoughtful surprise for any gardener on your list.

*There are plant clubs and pickup spots in Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Deerfield, Glenview, Highland Park, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Libertyville, Skokie/Evanston, Naperville and Winnetka.
