"From little acorns mighty oaks do grow" ~ American Proverb
Last Saturday was YVSC's ReTree Steamboat planting event and it was a HUGE success--a beautiful day, amazing partners and volunteers, and 400 seedlings planted along the Yampa River. This week, as we have wrapped up the project, putting our supplies and tools away, I have been thinking about how ReTree is really a metaphor for all of YVSC's programs. I believe that through our work, whether that is providing workshops for builders on energy efficiency, hosting a community recycling drop-off, or organizing a tree-planting event, we are bringing community together around a cause that will result in a healthier and more resilient Yampa Valley.
It is YVSC's job to plant those seeds of sustainability. We look to you, our community, to nurture those seeds. Thanks for joining with us to
to create real environmental, economic and social change together!

Community Recycling Drop-Off:
Thanks for Recycling it Right!
October 1 was YVSC's annual Community Recycling Drop-
Off. Since 2010, this one-
stop-drop event has become a fall ritual for residents to clear their clutter and make room for winter gear. Nearly 570 people participated this year--160 more than 2015 and our largest participation ever! We know the lines were long, but we appreciate your commitment to doing the right thing with your hard-to-recycle
materials.
Along with record-breaking participation came record-breaking volumes of materials collected:
-
30,000 lbs. electronics--
54% increase from last year!
-
2,559 lbs. latex paint
-
1,048 lbs. motor oil
-
83 mattresses--NEW this year!
-
1,000 lbs. clothing
-
60 cubic yards scrap metal and appliances--140% increase from last year!
-
411 fluorescent light bulbs
-
50 bike tires and tubes
-
2,500 books
-
10 cubic yards of skis--that's a lot of skis!
Response to the Drop-Off was so tremendous that some of our rec
ycli
ng partners hit their collection capacity before noon. If you were unable to recycle your paint, motor oil or other materials--or you missed the Drop-Off this year--please download YVSC's
A - Z Recycling Guide
for information on year-round, local hard-to-recycle options. A couple of popular items:
- Latex Paint: Ace Hardware and Sherwin-Williams. There is no charge to drop off, but there is a 5-gallon limit per visit.
- Motor Oil: D & D Enterprises, Doc's Auto Clinic and NAPA Auto Parts. Call first to check on quantity accepted.
Thank you to our recycling and community partners!

ReTree Steamboat: Connecting our Community to Trees
This year's ReTree Community Planting took place at Chuck Lewis State
Wildlife Area. This hidden gem of a public natural area is located just a few miles from downtown Steamboat Springs on the Yampa River. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has been restoring the area for several years. Part of the restoration of the wildlife area includes planting of native riparian species. In 2015, YVSC and Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) assisted CPW on two planting projects, as part of our ReTree Steamboat program.
On October 7 - 8, YVSC, CSFS, CPW and more than 90 volunteers continued with Phase III of this this work to further restore wildlife habitat and stabilize the riverbanks by planting close to 400 alder and willow seedlings. To ensure the long-term
survivability
of the trees, YVSC will partner with Rocky Mountain Youth Corps' Service Learning Corps to care for and monitor the seedlings for two years.
