CONSTRUCTION ADVISORY
REMINDER
Week of June 20

Construction is in progress to replace the eastbound and westbound bridges on Platte Avenue over Sand Creek between Wooten Road and the Powers Boulevard Interchange to improve safety.
Platte Avenue Bridge over Sand Creek
traffic shift overnight Wednesday, June 22

Traffic on Platte Avenue, including vehicular and bicycle traffic, will be shifted to the permanent section of the new bridge over Sand Creek.

Traffic Impacts

To prepare for the traffic shift, there will be a detour on westbound Platte Avenue between Wooten Road and the Powers Boulevard from 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 to 5 a.m. Thursday, June 23, resource and weather dependent.

Westbound traffic on Platte Avenue will be detoured onto the northbound exit ramp at the Powers Interchange, then north to Galley Road and west to Wooten Road. Southbound traffic on Powers desiring to head westbound on Platte Avenue will detour and exit at Galley Road then west to Wooten Road. Eastbound will be reduced to a single lane between 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 22 to 5 a.m. Thursday, June 23.

Drivers are asked to use caution in and around the area and follow construction signage and are advised to take alternate routes when possible. Space Center Drive remains closed at Platte Avenue as crews continue to work on utility activities.

All business access will remain open throughout construction and all work is weather and resource dependent.

Ongoing Traffic Impacts
  • Traffic control measures are in place. Please use caution
  • Construction activity is behind barrier along the median area of bridges
  • Speeds reduced to 35 mph in the work zone
  • Bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to seek alternate routes during construction
Project Overview
This project is replacing the two existing Platte Avenue bridges over Sand Creek with one bridge structure and adding sidewalks along the north and south sides of Platte Avenue over the creek. Construction will also accommodate the future Sand Creek Regional Trail under the bridge. The full project is expected to be complete in Fall 2022.

Platte Avenue is one of the city’s main east/west mobility corridors, and the new bridge will accommodate future growth along the corridor by providing additional lanes on Platte Avenue, along with signalizing the intersection at Space Center Drive. The project totals approximately $14 million, funded in part by the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority and a federal grant.
