FMS Implementing Board-Approved Social-Emotional Curriculum
In the second semester of the 2018-2019 school year, FMS staff members are continuing to go beyond the basics in order to help our middle school students excel and succeed in school and everyday life by working with the Second Step Middle School Program!

They’ve recently ended Second Step, Unit 2: Values and Friendships. Students learned about ways to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.
Next week, they will begin Unit 3: Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions. In this unit, students will learn about the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and decisions. They will also learn strategies for calming down and staying in control when experiencing strong emotions.

The Second Step Middle School Program focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school. To get more involved at home, you can visit ParenTeenConnect.org. This is a free website for parents and their teens created by the makers of the Second Step Program. It is a great resource for middle school families. It provides expert advice and practical tools for dealing with real parent-teen issues. While on this site, you can hear from real parents and teens about the issues that cause conflict in their lives—including screen time, independence, responsibility, and communication—and get expert advice. Visit ParenTeenConnect.org at home with your child, select a topic together, and get talking!

If you have any questions about the Second Step Middle School Program, please do not hesitate to contact FMS counselor, Breeann Gibbons (bgibbons@pcsdk12.org) for more information.
