Developing STEAM in PCSD
Platte Canyon School District staff members continue to pilot interesting STEAM projects for PCSD students at all levels.
At DCES, teacher Cathy Lynskey is working with students of all grade level with Bee-Bots. Bee-Bots are "
exciting little robot(s) designed for use by young children. These colorful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robots are tools to teach counting, sequencing, estimation, and problem-solving." (www.bee-bot.us) Students lay out paths for the robots and then program the robots to follow the designs.
Deer Creek Preschool and PCHS have teamed up to produce a STEAM problem-solving scenario. Deer Creek Preschool students were in need of a timer for hand-washing and Marilyn Sturek, Preschool Coordinator, thought that this may be a problem that PCHS students could solve. Steve Hanford, PCHS teacher, has challenged his STEM1 class students to design such a timer. Student teams are currently competing to create the best solution given the design parameters provided by Mrs. Sturek and Mr. Hanford.
Remembering Maggie Long
This past Friday and also today (Monday), students and staff members were/are invited to come by the "Remembering Maggie Long" wall just outside of the Canyon Room to add their thoughts to the wall. School counselors and mental health providers are nearby, if needed.
