BE PROACTIVE!

The nation is in a reactive mode; our heads are spinning and hearts are battered by the events in Minnesota and elsewhere.

Many of our Floridians for Democracy members, friends, neighbors, and family ask what they can do to oppose cruel and inhuman practices. It's time to go beyond emotions to the next proactive steps; here are a few actions you can do.

Actions You Can Take Now

1. Attend the FFD Post carding event on February 7 in Fort Myers.

If you cannot attend, feel free to hold your own event at your home or elsewhere. FFD can supply you with all the tools you need including postcards, messaging, and contact information for your local FL legislative representatives.

(Please see the flyer below for more details)

2. Utilize this list of the "worst" bills currently moving through the Florida legislature when you proactively call, write or lobby your local state representative and senator.

3. Protest and Resist; you will be heard.

The next large scale "No Kings" rally is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, with a flagship protest in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Please check the FFD Facebook page for information about protests in your area.

4. Support the Community

Transportation and resource support for the immigrant community is crucial. Many have been unable to leave their homes for school, church, doctor appointments, groceries, even rides to their workplace. You can help with rides to and from these everyday activities. You can also help by volunteering your time and treasure to food banks, and/or collect food, that serve these communities.

5. Call Florida Senators Rick Scott and Ashley Moody ASAP to thank them for their initial vote to stop funding for ICE unless specific conditions are in the U.S. Senate appropriations bill.

Call to express you support for immigration reforms: Senator Scott at 202-224-5274 and Senator Moody at 202-224-3041.

NO FUNDING FOR ICE UNLESS

•No arrests without legitimate warrants

•Agents must show IDs and not wear masks

•ICE stays out of churches and schools

•Homeland Security cooperates with state investigators

FFDI is working with the League of Women Voters Sanibel on educational programs that bring you updates on key legislative developments. They include interactive discussions directly with our communities, both in person and online.

The most recent program on January 18, focused on 2026 immigration realities: What Floridians should know about what is happening in immigration enforcement, how it is impacting Florida today, and what to expect looking forward.

The featured speaker was Indera DeMine, Esq. founder of the DeMine Immigration Law Firm in Fort Myers. Ms. DeMine immigrated to the United States from Guyana in 2002. In 2016, Ms. DeMine opened DeMine Immigration Law Firm, P.A.- an immigration-only firm with the goal of helping immigrants along their journey.

As an immigrant herself and a naturalized citizen of the United States, Ms. DeMine is passionate about immigration law and has firsthand knowledge of the complexities of the immigration system.

We encourage you to view this compelling program which also includes the latest information on a number of the bills working their way through the current legislative session.
