PLEASE APPROVE STANDARD ENHANCED SERVICES

This week, you should receive a combined proposal for the 2023 standard enhanced services including:

  • Spring Moss Control
  • Spring Flowers
  • Crabgrass Preventer Application
  • Turf Core Aeration
  • Fall Flowers
  • Winter Moss and Cranefly Control

Hopefully your property maintenance budgets are approved and you can give us approval of the routine standard enhanced services that we will perform throughout the year.

Prior to the season when these each of these services are performed, we will also individually propose them. To reduce the need for approving the services individually, we have begun to send a bulk approval form as we begin the year. This approval request will occur this week. Hopefully this bulk approval will save all of us time and allow us to better prepare for the service delivery, instead of waiting just prior to its occurrence.

Spring Turf Moss Control in March/April

Winter can be a tough time for lawns. Constant rain, especially in the shade, can lead to moss growth. We fight this every year. Although it is difficult to prevent, it luckily is easy to control. Liquid iron, sprayed on a lawn quickly and effectively controls moss. It will actually kill it in hours, turning it black.

Although it is easy to kill, it will regrow every year requiring annual treatment. We have even been experimenting with twice yearly treatment, December/January and March/April. Although normally considered an enhanced service, moss treatment is relatively inexpensive. We follow up our winter treatment with one in the spring, even though we treated in the winter. It sometimes reestablishes, so it's good to treat again in the spring.

Spring Flowers in April!

Seasonal color is one of our specialties. Not only do we produce some of the most creative flower combinations, but our flower plantings are some of the healthiest due to our carefully designed installation and maintenance programs.

We add a creative design flair to our summer color plantings. Every year we come up with new and unique combinations that break from the conventional of blocks and stripes seen on most other commercial properties. We have a test bed at our office where we try out these new varieties and combinations. We make sure they work before we will plant them on our customers properties.

Crabgrass Preventer Application in May

Crabgrass is a common name a layperson uses for any grass that they don’t like growing in their lawn. However, here in the Northwest, it has been relatively non-existent until recently. Crabgrass is a common annual grass weed in many of the parts of the US where summers are hotter. Due to our cool climate it has not been an issue in the past.

Recently, mostly due to our warming climate, we are now seeing it where we had rarely or never seen it before. Also, due to our long hot summers over the past several years, we have seen it explode on most properties.

Therefore, we are now recommending to treat lawns with a crabgrass preventer in the May as they do in many other parts of the country.

Turf Core Aeration in September

We recommend aeration to our customers as a standard part of our yearly turf care program. Aeration improves overall turf and is also the best method of managing thatch and soil compaction. Aerating opens up the soil to allow water to more easily enter the soil, reducing run-off and improving irrigation effectiveness.

We can’t quantitatively prove it, but we believe that aeration pays for itself through water savings. The benefits of aeration are significant, but short-lived, lasting only one season. This is why we propose it every year. This will maximize the water saving and return on your investment.

We previously performed aeration in early summer but with our newly recommended Crabgrass preventer now scheduled for May, aeration in June would impact the effectiveness of the crabgrass control treatment. Therefore, we now perform aeration in September.

Fall Flowers in October

Winter flowers are challenging to maintain in our mild wet climate. Our flowers plantings are some of the healthiest due to our carefully designed installation and maintenance programs. Although cold hardy, pansies are susceptible to soil borne diseases which are prevalent in our mild wet winters. Each year, without proper installation and maintenance, these diseases attack pansy plantings, reducing their health and growth, and sometimes even killing the flowers.

To protect them from these diseases, we have developed a program beginning with how the flowers are grown, followed by replenishing sterile fresh potting soil at planting, and treating throughout the winter season with fungicides. We believe we have the most consistent pansies in the area!

Winter Turf Moss and Cranefly Control in December

Winter can be a tough time for lawns. Constant rain, especially in the shade, can lead to moss growth. We fight this every year. Although it is difficult to prevent, it luckily is easy to control. Liquid iron, sprayed on a lawn quickly and effectively controls moss. It will actually kill it in hours, turning it black.

Although it is easy to kill, it will regrow every year requiring annual treatment. We have even been experimenting with twice yearly treatment, December/January and March/April. Although normally considered an enhanced service, moss treatment is relatively inexpensive. Our moss control program starts with the winter treatment when moss begins to develop. If left unchecked, moss can choke out the grass over the winter.
