How long have you been teaching? How long have you been at Father Judge?

I have been teaching for 34 years. Although I was trained to be a high school math teacher, I started out teaching 7th and 8th grade Math and Science and I did that for about 10 years. At the HS level, I've been a classroom teacher, department chair, Vice-Principal, Principal, and President, but my favorite place always to be is interacting with my students in the classroom. This is my second year at Father Judge.

What subjects do you teach?

I love teaching Math, any class really, but I especially enjoy teaching Algebra, Pre-Calc and Statistics. We are bombarded with so much information and so many numbers in our daily lives. I believe it is important to have a strong understanding of Mathematics so you can effectively and thoughtfully understand all the information you need to process every day and successfully and responsibly interact in the world around you.

What is your favorite part of teaching at Father Judge?

I really enjoy the students. I find them to be very clever and genuinely kind young men. I also enjoy the Salesian spirit that permeates the community.

What made you want to become a teacher?

I loved learning so I thought teaching would be a good fit for me. Fortunately, I also had really good teachers along the way and they served as role models and mentors for me when I was starting out. When I first considered becoming a teacher, I was torn between teaching English and Math at the HS level. I was definitely leaning towards English but then I saw a HS math teacher explain something to a struggling classmate and you could see the moment the light bulb went on and that was the moment I knew Math would be the major for me.

What is the one takeaway you have from your teaching career?

Every year teaching renews my hope for the future of our society and the planet. I find HS students, regardless of what is happening around them, committed and fervent in their belief that they can make the world better. I love supporting them in their commitments and helping them develop the skills they need to create change in our world. In turn, they renew my commitments and convictions to protect the environment and make the world a more just place for everyone to live.

We are blessed to have Sr. Nace at our school. The Father Judge community is thankful for all of our teachers and their tireless work in bettering the minds of our students. - Father Judge Administration
