Andrew Timmons graduated in Spring 2018 with his MA in English and WGS Graduate Certificate at BC. Andrew was first introduced to Women's and Gender Studies when he was in undergrad at Loyola University Chicago. When Andrew began his program at Boston College, he knew that he wanted to continue engaging those questions and be introduced to new questions within a likeminded academic community.

Clara Tosat graduated in Spring 2018 with her MA in Hispanic Studies and WGS Graduate Certificate at BC

This WGS Certificate has helped her explore classes outside her department and also has made her acquire more perspectives in terms of how broad the term "Women and Gender Studies" is. Clara is a journalist, so being aware of different strategies to report on gender (or considering it as part of your narrative) is very important to her.

Anna Glassman is pursuing her MA in Romance Languages. Anna believes the Certificate will allow her to approach her graduate classes with a focused eye, which will require her to produce mid-terms and final projects that are meaningful to her. Further, these final projects could turn into greater works that may allow her to facilitate important conversations about gender and gender issues.

Megan Crotty is getting her PhD in English. As a postcolonial scholar, it is important for her to focus on the overlapping issues a subjugated person may face before she can analyze their representation in literature. Her hope is that the Certificate will make her a more thoughtful scholar, but she would also like to teach cross-listed courses that look at literature through a feminist lens and is confident the Certificate will help her do that.

The Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) Graduate Certificate at Boston College provides students with the foundational tools to complete gendered analyses in their respective research endeavors, as well as critical lenses that intersect with other axes of identity.

To earn the WGS Graduate Certificate, students must be enrolled in a graduate program within the Morrissey College of Arts & Sciences (MCAS) and must complete four graduate-level courses selected from the list of approved Women’s and Gender Studies Courses . These course offerings draw from various departments within the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, as well as the Graduate Consortium in Women's Studies (GCWS) at MIT, and are thus subject to change from semester to semester. Every approved course can also be used to fulfill requirements for the student’s M.A. or Ph.D. program.
