Fun Facts About Sunglasses

• They were once used in court. In ancient China, judges wore tinted lenses made of smoky quartz—not to block the sun, but to hide their facial expressions during trials.

• Polarized lenses were inspired by pilots. Polarized sunglasses became popular after being developed for pilots in the 1930s to reduce glare at high altitudes.

• UV protection has nothing to do with tint. Darker lenses don’t always mean better protection. It’s the UV filter built into the lens—not the shade—that shields your eyes from harmful rays.
