By middle school, students without access to quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities can suffer up to a 6,000-hour learning gap compared with peers enrolled in quality programs (ExpandED Schools, 2013).
Quality summer programs offer young people the opportunity to forge positive relationships with adults and peers, and build social, cognitive, and practical skills. Healthy relationships form the foundation of social-emotional skills and the ability to function successfully throughout life—at home, in school, with family and friends, and as members of a community. (Crowley, Greenberg, & Jones, 2015).
