About the Mural
Commissioned by The Library Foundation and made possible through a generous gift by the Dr. Nona Niland Family Fund in honor of Brad Moore, the mural commemorates the life and work of beloved musician and artist Daniel Johnston, who passed away in 2019, leaving behind a rich legacy of art and music. Artist Jason Archer mimics Daniel Johnston’s playful, surreal style and invokes themes Johnston explored throughout his life and work, including struggles with mental illness. The unveiling of the mural coincides closely with Hi How Are You Day on January 22, Johnston’s birthday—a day now dedicated to mental health advocacy and awareness.
About the Central Library’s Austin Collections Room
The Austin Collections at the Central Library is a fitting and appropriate site for a Daniel Johnston mural, as the room celebrates Austin’s vibrant and creative culture. The Austin Collections are supported by the Brad Moore Collections Endowment, which was established to honor Brad’s life and his deep interest in Austin’s musical heritage.
