January 2024 Photo Newsletter Director's Message Happy New Year!  As I write this message, we are finally getting some snow. Already 6-8 inches have accumulated, and the forecast is for a foot. I have always loved the winter with the snow creating a beautiful white coating on the trees, plants and ground. The bird’s color pops against a background of snow and the night doesn’t seem quite so dark when the moon is reflecting on it. But how to capture this beauty? Often my winter photos are uninteresting as it is difficult to catch the nuances of the wintery landscape. By attending the presentations on photography that have been offered to our NEGC Photography Group, I am learning techniques that add more interest to my photos. I am looking forward to the photography tips and tricks from Rick Sammon via a zoom presentation in March. Links to register are in this issue. Many thanks to Arabella for coordinating this and making us aware of other opportunities to hone and perfect our photography skills. Rick Sammon, author of 43 books and host of 45 online classes, will share with you his tips, tricks and techniques for getting pro-quality photographs – from close-ups to super wide-angle photographs - with your smartphone.

To demonstrate his talking points, Rick, an iPhone photographer, will share his photographs from Morocco, Tanzania, Florida, and from some of our national parks. Rick will also talk about why you should have your smartphone with you all the time, as he does when exploring in and around his home in Croton on Hudson, NY.

All members of New England's federated garden clubs are welcome to participate in the NEGC Photography Group. We will showcase the work of our garden club photographers, in furtherance of the mission and programs of National Garden Clubs. Our NEGC garden club members will have access to learning about the art and science of photography thru our activities and publications. Our New England Garden Club members will have access to online and in-person workshops with noted photographers, thru the Photography Group's membership in NECCC - New England Council of Camera Clubs, a member group of the Photography Society of America PSA. We will provide photographic educational information to our garden club members; opportunities for dialogue and discussion; image critique and evaluation of members’ images; information about photography exhibiting opportunities; and information about photography judging.
