We are happy to announce we are starting our 40th year, TODAY, August 1, 2012, of being in business for our customers needs!
On August 1, 1972, Glenn and Maryann Hetrick bought an existing commercial offset printing company (Peerless Printing Co.) in Altoona, Pennsylvania that had been rooted in the local community since the 1930s. Peerless Printing still exists as a social and formal business printing company. In 1982, "The Letter Peddler" which was an off-shoot of Peerless Printing Co. was selling stationery on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD. An employee from our company suggested, that in addition to stationery, we should sell the LATEST NEW mylar balloons with messages printed on them since this was the latest craze and the boardwalk was the place to try selling them! Little did our operation know this would be the last year of selling in Ocean City, as we came back to our local community with the newest craze sweeping central Pennsylvania. We have been rooted in our community with our balloon business for 30 years as "The Balloon Bag". Over the past 30 years our balloon interests have evolved from a cash and carry, local delivery, costume messengers balloon shop to now a full scale balloon event decorating service and an internet balloon message company that ships helium filled balloons in a box with a gift across the USA in 2-3 business days! In 1992, a long standing balloon customer arrived back from vacationing in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia and noticed while in VA that the latest NEW home decorations were decorative flags. At the request of that customer, Glenn spent the remainder of his week developing our decorative flag business vendor list. As our customer based increased and while the current war (Desert Storm) was taking place, our customers asked for more and more patriotic flags. Therefore, we felt that our community needed a local destination to purchase such patriotic supplies. We appreciate and honor all our local veterans and organizations as well as corporate businesses and government agencies and the public in general who have bought USA, state, military, and custom flags. After the wake of 9/11/01, The Flag Station USA began selling, repairing, and installing flagpoles as well. We hope if you ever have a flagpole or flag need, please think about us. In 2003, after the untimely passing of Maryann due to complications with diabetes and a heart condition, the owners' son Craig who was attending Pennsylvania State University at the time for his degree in Business Administration decided that his family interests meant more than a diploma on the wall and he moved home from campus life to assist in his family's business. Craig has been a key part in helping to grow our internet presence as well as he has been involved in all general operations of the business. As the business moves into the 21st century and starts another decade of old and new business relationships, Peerless Specialties, LLC is glad that it is diversified to meet our many customer needs and look forward to another 40 years of serving them. As a special bonus to help us celebrate, for any wine order in the month of August, Peerless will be adding a complimentary '40 years chocolate' treat! BUT what Peerless would greatly appreciate more than anything is some help from you, our friends, by sending us a tax-deductible check in any amount made payable to: The American Heart Association in remembrance of Maryann Hetrick. All checks received will be forward to Glenn and Maryann's daughter who has been devoted to walking the Heart Walk in New York City every year since her passing. She has raised thousands of dollars for this great cause thru the help of her business associates and friends. We now feel that we would like to ask you, our loyal customers, to assist.
