Dear Saint Andrew Families,

This past weekend we had the pleasure of interviewing and assessing prospective students for the 2019-2020 academic school year. Most were 3 and 4-year old’s with enthusiasm and spunk! Yesterday we inducted 23 seventh and eighth grade students into the Saint Andrew Chapter of the National Jr. Honor Society - a society that recognizes students for scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character. This week, our Breen Tournament is well under way and our Mighty Wildcats are doing a great job of hosting our sister schools.

Thanks to all of our generous “Eat, Drink and Be Giving” Auction sponsors. Mark your calendars and I hope to see you at the Auction on April 6, 2019. Please join us for Mass tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. in the gym. Mrs. Fuelling’s Class first grade students will be in charge of the liturgy. Last but not least, “be kind and remember your manners.” This is what I hear a parent tell her daughters every morning at drop-off. Not only does it validate why her daughters are the students that they are, but it also gives me great hope for the future. May God bless our Wildcat students and their families.
The foundation of our primary and elementary classrooms lies in the English/Language Arts instruction. Our teachers are second to none in their delivery of balanced literacy instruction. Students engage in daily whole group lessons, small group activities, collaborative work with their peers, and independent reading. Additionally, students read from all genres including biographies, historical fiction, informational text, as well as many others. Classic novel studies encompass another part of our ELA curriculum; students are exposed to some of history's greatest works of literature. The elementary reading program allows students to develop and grow at individual rates.
The preschool provides an amazing foundation for our students. They go so far as to dress themselves in the letter of the week. Their handmade aprons are an example of the emphasis on literacy throughout our campus.
Today, Mrs. Louden's class was working on reading strategies such as making predictions and connections. Research proves that all successful readers must learn and use strategies such as these. Our Wonders reading program integrates these strategies into every lesson.  Mrs. Louden reminded her students to read with expression when reading dialog. The class discussed text features and making inferences. It's amazing to hear these conversations among the students and faculty; the students' use of academic vocabulary is fantastic!
The school is committed to ensuring every child is on or above grade level. Patti Trutter, our reading interventionist, works with small groups of students in preschool through third grade. Her talents far exceed what can be put into words and allow us to meet the needs of our students.

Mrs. Trutter said, "We want to give students a solid and firm foundation starting with phonetic awareness then onto the decoding of words. We work on improving student accuracy while strengthening fluency and comprehension. The connection between receptive and expressive language is something I concentrate on as well."
Thank you to our faculty for their devotion to literacy and thank you to all of our parents who read at home with our wonderful students.

CELEBRATING DR. SEUSS'S BIRTHDAY
NEA’s (National Education Association) Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

Next week, in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Mrs. Mack and Ms. Alvarez will host a week- long celebration for PreK -3 rd grades. Each grade will experience fun and “seussical” activities during their library time. On Friday, March 1, PreK and Kindergarten will help us celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday in a fun-filled and interactive way. We look forward to celebrating with your students! “Oh, the places you’ll go!”
GIRL SCOUT TROOP 3021 NEEDS YOUR HELP
The Project: SAS 8th grade students Gabriella Miranda, Isabella Jovanovic, Valerie Gutknecht, and Annabel Dikes, members of Girl Scout Troop 3021, are working on earning their Silver Award this year which requires 50 hours of service to an organization. This is outside of their required hours for school.

The girls have adopted the Assessment Center at Catholic Charities of Fort Worth and have been diligently working on various projects for them. This center is the temporary home for children who are removed from unsafe situations and waiting for foster homes and also for refugee children who have been displaced from family.
These children have gone through so much and even though the care takers are wonderful, it can be a scary time for them.

The girls want to help make this transition easier for them. They have made craft kits for the kids to do during the holidays, wrote them welcome letters in both English and Spanish, and are now working on a book drive for the kids.

How Can You Help: The Girl Scouts would like to collect new or gently used books for children in grades Kindergarten to 6th. The books can be in both English and Spanish. Collection boxes will be placed in the Front Office area for your child to drop off their donations.

The Goal: They would like to collect 500 books by March 22nd.

These books will bring so many smiles to the faces of these children. This is a simple way to help make a difference in a child's life. Thank your for your donations.
FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN

We ask that parents do not drop off students before 7:30 a.m. All children dropped off before 7:30 a.m. will be sent to the cafeteria for before school care. The safety and security of our students is always a priority.

Each week (from Wednesday afternoon to the following Wednesday morning) two families will have the opportunity to take these statues home and use them as a source of inspiration, prayer and reflection. The tote bag containing the statue will also have suggested prayers.
