Over the past few weeks, the 8th grade class has been conducting research for an essay. By the time our students are in middle school, we expect them to understand and use the formal writing process. How do we accomplish that?

In the fall of 2017, we developed a new writing scope and sequence and aligned ourselves vertically across the campus from third grade through eighth grade. Teachers use the same academic vocabulary for the formal writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing. The year long plan for writing includes expectations and guidelines for faculty to follow which promotes continuity and consistency with instruction as students move through the grades.
Students are learning to compose personal narratives, persuasive essays, and other expository essays. Additionally, they have opportunities for creative writing as well as formal research papers.

As the school year progresses, we collaborate and find ways to improve in order to better serve our students. This summer faculty have the opportunity to attend a two day conference focussed on writing instruction in elementary and middle school grades. We are excited and pleased with the progress our students are making and love empowering them to express themselves on paper.

ASH WEDNESDAY PRAYER SERVICE

The school Ash Wednesday Prayer Service, led by our Student Council, will take place in the gym tomorrow at 2:00pm. Parents are invited to attend.
MASS WITH THE BISHOP

Bishop Michael Olson will celebrate Mass with our students on Wednesday, March 20th at 8:15 am in the Church. All are invited to attend.
LENTEN INFORMATION

  • Lunch time will include periods of silence for reflection every Friday during Lent.

5K – 2 nd  Grades – 10 minutes
3 rd  – 4 th  Grades - 15 minutes
5 th  – 8 th  Grades - 20 minutes

  • Teachers will have their classes pray the Stations of the Cross every Friday. This will be done in the courtyard, weather permitting.

  • There will be $2.00 Denim Fridays during Lent. Students and staff will be allowed to wear jeans, spirit shirts and tennis shoes every Friday for $2, or one payment of $10. The money collected will go to Educate the Children Honduras. These children do not have easy access to education due to poverty and to their geographical region (jungles/rainforest).
IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS
Effective March 4, 2019, students can only be dismissed from the front office with individuals who are listed in FACTS/Renweb (designated pick-up). The office staff will not be allowed to release students to individuals based on a phone call or email; the individual must be listed in FACTS/Renweb. This is for the safety of all students. Please contact Mindy Dyer if you need help adding people to your Renweb account.

All visitors on campus will be required to show their driver's license upon arrival. No exceptions. This ensures that all visitors meet the requirements for interacting with students; it also helps us know who is on campus in the event of an emergency.

We ask that parents do not drop off students before 7:30 a.m. All children dropped off before 7:30 a.m. will be sent to the cafeteria for before school care. The safety and security of our students is always a priority.

Remember, no early dismissals from the front office after 2:45pm.
WE ARE SO PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS

SUPPORTING SAS
GIRL SCOUT TROOP 3021 NEEDS YOUR HELP
The Project: SAS 8th grade students Gabriella Miranda, Isabella Jovanovic, Valerie Gutknecht, and Annabel Dikes, members of Girl Scout Troop 3021, are working on earning their Silver Award this year which requires 50 hours of service to an organization. This is outside of their required hours for school.

The girls have adopted the Assessment Center at Catholic Charities of Fort Worth and have been diligently working on various projects for them. This center is the temporary home for children who are removed from unsafe situations and waiting for foster homes and also for refugee children who have been displaced from family.
These children have gone through so much and even though the care takers are wonderful, it can be a scary time for them.

The girls want to help make this transition easier for them. They have made craft kits for the kids to do during the holidays, wrote them welcome letters in both English and Spanish, and are now working on a book drive for the kids.

How Can You Help: The Girl Scouts would like to collect new or gently used books for children in grades Kindergarten to 6th. The books can be in both English and Spanish. Collection boxes will be placed in the Front Office area for your child to drop off their donations.

The Goal: They would like to collect 500 books by March 22nd.

These books will bring so many smiles to the faces of these children. This is a simple way to help make a difference in a child's life. Thank your for your donations.
NOTES FROM THE NURSES
Spring is just around the corner!  And so are the longer days.  As the days get longer, the temptation to stay up later and enjoy the sunlight and wonderful weather increases.  However, quality sleep is important to each child and helps make sure they are at their best for learning. Below is some information from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine about the benefits of sleep, as well as the suggested amount of sleep children should get each night.
Your Children May Need More Sleep
Getting your children to bed early has more benefits than just a few hours of quiet time at night for you. New research explains how getting the right amount of sleep may help children fight obesity, avoid colds and other illnesses, and succeed in school. Please note the following facts about the importance of sleep for children.
1.    Sleep promotes growth.
2.    Sleeps helps the heart to be healthy.
3.    Sleep affects weight.
4.    Sleep helps fight germs.
5.    Sleep reduces risk of injury.
6.    Sleep increases children’s attention span.
7.    Sleep boosts learning.
Childhood Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at different stages in their development. Keep in mind that these numbers reflect total sleep hours in a 24-hour period. So, if your child still naps, you'll need to take that into account when you add up his or her typical sleep hours.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to contact us.
