Dear Saint Andrew Family,
During the month of May our students will be honoring Our Lady at every school Mass by presenting her with flowers. The faculty and staff will be in charge of tomorrow’s 8:15 a.m. liturgy and students in grades 6 to 8 will be presenting the flowers. Please join us. You are then welcome to return at 1:30 p.m. for our annual May Crowning, also in the church. This special day marks the “beginning of the end” for our 8th grade students. Traditionally, on this day students take their 8th grade graduation picture with their gowns in the morning and then do a “living rosary” at the May Crowning in the afternoon. It is going to be special and I am excited to be a part of it.
On Friday, May 3rd, we will host a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast in the Parish Hall from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
We, the Saint Andrew Church and School community, are very grateful for your service. Don’t forget to check the Wildcat Weekly for important events to include “Teacher of the Day” and “Popsicles on the Playground.”
I am on my way home from my hometown of El Paso, TX where I went to pay my final respects to my beautiful Godmother and Aunt, Guadalupe Cruz. She was very special to me.
Thank you and may God bless you and your beautiful families.
Love and Prayers,
Mrs. Macias

An important piece of our instructional plan at Saint Andrew Catholic School is on-going assessment. Throughout the school year, we administer assessments to students to ensure learning, identify gaps, and confirm mastery of objectives; assessment data also helps us make instructional decisions to better meet the needs of your students.
Assessments on our campus take form in a variety of ways. Teachers check for understanding during classroom discussions and when reading written responses. Students have an opportunity to share their knowledge in collaborative groups or by creating a project. You might find a Venn diagram on an anchor chart in a classroom that is covered in post-it notes that contain student responses. Certainly our students also participate in formal assessments on a regular basis.
On-going assessment is an important part of our student-centered campus. As the school year begins to come to a close, teachers are preparing end of year summative assessments. Many of these are not administered for a grade; more importantly, the data is used to identify strengths and weaknesses while allowing us to reflect on our instructional practices and curriculum, ensuring every child is successful, challenged, and supported throughout the learning process.

The Saint Andrew Catholic School National Junior Honor Society is collecting toiletries for the immigrant men, women and children coming to El Paso. Every year, the Texas Library Association reveals a list of 20 books for Texas students third-sixth grade to vote as their favorite. Students must read at least 5 to be eligible to vote. The Bluebonnet Award is the only award given by student votes only. This year,
Sergeant Reckless: The True Story of the Little Horse Who Became a Hero
won the vote from Texas Students. I challenged our students to read 10 or all 20 books. 10 are picture books and the other 10 are chapter books. If a student read 10 books, they receive a popsicle or ice cream. If they read all 20, they receive lunch from Jason's Deli and a popsicle or ice cream.
Tuesday, April 30 the students get to celebrate in the courtyard.
I am so proud of all our students! Congratulations on a job well done!

Spring is here! That means the end of the school year is just around the corner. With that in mind there are some “housekeeping” items that we wanted to remind you of:
1. Medication stored in the clinic MUST be picked up by a parent or guardian on or before the last day of school. Medication not picked up by May 30, 2019 will be taken to a pharmacy for proper and safe disposal.
2. To keep medication in the school clinic for the 2019/20 school year, whether prescription or over-the-counter, a diocesan medication permit MUST be on file in the clinic. Medication permits must be signed by your child’s physician and one parent. Without this permit, medication cannot be stored in nor administered through the clinic. All medication must be in the original packaging, and have the prescription label attached.
3. If your child has food or environmental allergies with risk of anaphylaxis, a Food Allergy Action Plan, medication permit, AND epinephrine (EpiPen, etc.) MUST be on campus prior to your child starting school and in order for your child to remain in school.
4. Medication permits and Food Allergy Action Plans can be obtained from the school and must be filled out completely. These forms are also available on the school website. There are 2 pages to the Food Allergy Action plan. Please complete both. A student photo in the top right corner of page one is required
5. Any time your child receives any immunizations, please provide a copy of the immunization record to the school nurse. All incoming 7th grade students are required to have a Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap) booster within the last 5 years, as well as one Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine. All incoming Kindergarten students will need completed Tdap, MMR, and Varicella. Please provide a copy of the record to the school prior to the first day of school in August.
6. If your 5th-8th grade student will play a sport, or 4th grade student will play football in the upcoming school year, a physical is required. Physicals must be done on or after June 1, 2019. Physicals done prior to this date cannot be accepted.
Thank you for allowing us to care for your students this year.

The Spiritual Life Committee at Saint Andrew Catholic School offers two blessed statues to its families: A statue of Rosa Mystica and an Immaculate Heart of Mary Statue.
Each week (from Wednesday afternoon to the following Wednesday morning) two families will have the opportunity to take these statues home and use them as a source of inspiration, prayer and reflection. The tote bag containing the statue will also have suggested prayers. This special tradition will hopefully be one full of meaning and faith for each of you.
