It is so good to be back at Saint Andrew! The Principals’ retreat in Muenster, TX was exactly what I needed and my participation on the Immaculate Conception Catholic School accreditation team was very valuable. Here at Saint Andrew we have begun our own accreditation self-study process alongside our wonderful Saint Andrew Church and School community.
Please be advised that unfortunately, Bishop Olson will not be celebrating Mass with us tomorrow. We will have him back, however, when the construction of the church is complete. Please join us for Mass at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow morning in the gym. Fr. Jim will be our celebrant.
A few of our Wildcat Yearbook students will be at Dismissal on Thursday, the 21st, asking our parents questions for a story in the yearbook. Thank you for your participation in their efforts to write about the new Dismissal Process.
Last but not least, I would like to announce that Ms. Pat Cooper will be retiring at the end of this year. Ms. Cooper has served our Saint Andrew students for 29 years – two in first grade and 27 in Kindergarten. We are so sad to see her go but happy that she will entering the land of “do as you please,” as my former Superintendent used to say. She will be sorely missed but has agreed to substitute every now and then. Thank you, Ms. Cooper, for your years of service and for your kind self. Go forth and “do as you please” for you have surely earned it. May God continue to bless you and may you always keep our Wildcat students and families in your prayers.
Join us for Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. in the church, this Friday, the 22nd, The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a fish fry from 5-7 p.m. in the Parish Hall. We hope to see you there!
God bless you and your beautiful families,
Mrs. Macias

Saint Andrew Catholic School invests annually in programs that promote student success. The Renaissance Learning Program is a web-based application consisting of the STAR Reading and Accelerated Reading (AR) programs for students and teachers. Students take a diagnostic reading test (STAR) at the beginning of the school year and at the end of each quarter. Teachers use data from these tests to monitor student’s individual reading progress, as well as, help set appropriate reading ranges and individual goals for each student.
The Accelerated Reader Program is designed to build and encourage students to become lifelong readers and learners. Early on, program motivates students to read, as they set goals and earn reading comprehension points toward their goal(s). It helps students improve their reading as well as build their vocabulary.
|
|
The Accelerated Reader Program has been in existence for over 30 years and has provided reading practice to millions of students. Students select an Accelerated Reader title (on their level) to read at his/her own pace. There are currently over 180,000 books from which to choose. Students are highly encouraged to read these AR books at least twice before independently taking the AR computer assessment. Students AND teachers monitor reading progress toward goals.
This program also provides teachers an effective way to monitor all forms of guided reading practice, as teachers may select an AR title to read within the guided reading sessions. Saint Andrew Catholic School consistently produces students who are reading above grade level. We have included a link for parents that includes more great information.

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS
|
|
Effective March 4, 2019, students can only be dismissed from the front office with individuals who are listed in FACTS/Renweb (designated pick-up). The office staff will not be allowed to release students to individuals based on a phone call or email; the individual must be listed in FACTS/Renweb. This is for the safety of all students. Please contact Mindy Dyer if you need help adding people to your Renweb account.
All visitors on campus will be required to show their driver's license upon arrival. No exceptions. This ensures that all visitors meet the requirements for interacting with students; it also helps us know who is on campus in the event of an emergency.
We ask that parents do not drop off students before 7:30 a.m. All children dropped off before 7:30 a.m. will be sent to the cafeteria for before school care. The safety and security of our students is always a priority.
Remember, no early dismissals from the front office after 2:45pm.

Spring is here! And so are the longer days. As the days get longer, the temptation to stay up later and enjoy the sunlight and wonderful weather increases. However, quality sleep is important to each child and helps make sure they are at their best for learning. Below is some information from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine about the benefits of sleep, as well as the suggested amount of sleep children should get each night.
|
|
Your Children May Need More Sleep
Getting your children to bed early has more benefits than just a few hours of quiet time at night for you. New research explains how getting the right amount of sleep may help children fight obesity, avoid colds and other illnesses, and succeed in school. Please note the following facts about the importance of sleep for children.
1. Sleep promotes growth.
2. Sleeps helps the heart to be healthy.
3. Sleep affects weight.
4. Sleep helps fight germs.
5. Sleep reduces risk of injury.
6. Sleep increases children’s attention span.
7. Sleep boosts learning.
|
|
Childhood Sleep Guidelines
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) provides some helpful guidelines regarding just how much sleep children need at different stages in their development. Keep in mind that these numbers reflect total sleep hours in a 24-hour period. So, if your child still naps, you'll need to take that into account when you add up his or her typical sleep hours.

If you have any questions or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Spiritual Life Committee at Saint Andrew Catholic School offers two blessed statues to its families: A statue of Rosa Mystica and an Immaculate Heart of Mary Statue.
Each week (from Wednesday afternoon to the following Wednesday morning) two families will have the opportunity to take these statues home and use them as a source of inspiration, prayer and reflection. The tote bag containing the statue will also have suggested prayers. This special tradition will hopefully be one full of meaning and faith for each of you.
