Dear Saint Andrew Family,

Happy Easter and greetings from beautiful Chicago! I am attending the National Catholic Education Conference (NCEA), a three day conference for Catholic School educators from around the world. Yesterday morning we celebrated Mass with Cardinal Blasé J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. It was beautiful! We were treated to gospel music from the children’s soul choir, a choir comprised primarily of African American children with joyful voices and lively spirits. After Mass we were treated to a lovely performance of The Dragon Dance from the St. Therese Chinese Catholic School.

I am blessed to be here, learning, networking and growing in my faith and in my ministry as a Catholic School Educator. I have brought your intentions with me and I carry you in my heart always. Please pray for all Catholic School educators during these turbulent times in our church. I will see you Friday, April 26.

May God bless you and your beautiful families.

The Ignite Enrichment Program is in its second year at Saint Andrew Catholic School.  The program exists to enrich and challenge our students on different levels, while supporting the academic rigor of our school. Every student at Saint Andrew will have an opportunity to participate in the Ignite Program.

Study Groups consist of a small number of students who are identified based upon testing scores. To participate in the Ignite Study Group Program, students must score in the 95 th percentile or above on two areas of the CogAT test.  Or, students must score in the 95 th percentile or above on one area of the CogAT test and score in the 95 th percentile or above on two areas of the Iowa Assessments.  Students who are identified meet in the Ignite Lab twice weekly to participate in units of study that are cross-curricular, and academically challenging.   Students also take part in an Independent Study of their choice.
Whole Class Enrichment Lessons are offered to all students in grades K-6 th .  Classes are invited into the Ignite Lab to take part in lessons designed to stretch thinking, and promote problem solving. Some topics for lessons include deductive reasoning, analytical thinking, convergent vs. divergent thinking, creative problem solving, and thinking using Bloom’s Taxonomy.  Classes are offered every 4-6 weeks.

Ignite Boxes are available in the Ignite Lab to check out for students in 3 rd -6 th grades.  Ignite Boxes are open ended challenges in Engineering, Math, Science, and Art. Each box contains the materials needed to complete the challenge.  Students are encouraged to take pictures or videos of their completed challenge to share. There are currently 24 Ignite Boxes available in the Lab for check out.

Students completing an Independent Study have the opportunity to show their products at the Student Showcase on May 16th from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.
