ROCKSTAR CELEBRATION
By: Sharon Kinsey, 1st Grade Teacher
There is definitive evidence that Saint Andrew, our parents, and students are above and beyond. Recently, a group of nineteen first graders rallied around their reading success with a Rock Star Celebration. If you think little first graders must always have instant gratification, think again. These little ones worked, read, and waited for three grading quarters, 27 weeks, for a promised reward. The challenge was to make their Accelerated Reading Goals, 85%, in comprehension and total reading points.  During the third quarter this is exactly what all nineteen accomplished.

I’ve never seen little children so focused and set on reading for understanding.  This was all accomplished because of parents and their willingness to listen to their children read and reinforce skills being taught in the classroom daily. The children had cheerleaders such as parents and teachers who played the major role in this endeavor. In addition, our reading specialist, Ms. Trutter spent hours with me in the classroom teaching necessary skills needed for successful and independent reading. We worked with students daily, never giving up or missing a beat. Ms. Alvarez, our librarian, also worked with and encouraged the children in book choices.

The Koala Bear classroom was rewarded with their promised and long-awaited Rock Star Celebration: chips, cookies, and music. Kelley Vieth, a parent, provided the music and ice cream as they danced in the school court yard. First grade Koala Bears had a fabulous time with their friends and fellow outstanding readers.

This is not exclusive to first grade. Each quarter an extensive list of names is recognized from each grade level. These are children who have also met their AR Goals for the grading quarter.  As we have experienced, a love of early reading affects the academic lives of these children for a lifetime and this is certainly evident in our student’s reading success.

God bless our sweet focused readers, parents, and our school.
MAY FLOWERS FOR MARY
The month of May is a special time for Catholics to honor our Blessed Mother Mary. At SAS we would like to honor Mary at Mass throughout the entire month of May, not just at the 8th grade May crowning. Different grade levels will bring flowers each week on Wednesdays and preschool on Thursdays.

NOTES FROM THE NURSES
Spring is here! That means the end of the school year is just around the corner. With that in mind there are some “housekeeping” items that we wanted to remind you of:

1. Medication stored in the clinic MUST be picked up by a parent or guardian on or before the last day of school. Medication not picked up by May 30, 2019 will be taken to a pharmacy for proper and safe disposal.

2. To keep medication in the school clinic for the 2019/20 school year, whether prescription or over-the-counter, a diocesan medication permit MUST be on file in the clinic. Medication permits must be signed by your child’s physician and one parent. Without this permit, medication cannot be stored in nor administered through the clinic. All medication must be in the original packaging, and have the prescription label attached.

3. If your child has food or environmental allergies with risk of anaphylaxis, a Food Allergy Action Plan, medication permit, AND epinephrine (EpiPen, etc.) MUST be on campus prior to your child starting school and in order for your child to remain in school.

4. Medication permits and Food Allergy Action Plans can be obtained from the school and must be filled out completely. These forms are also available on the school website. There are 2 pages to the Food Allergy Action plan. Please complete both. A student photo in the top right corner of page one is required

5. Any time your child receives any immunizations, please provide a copy of the immunization record to the school nurse. All incoming 7th grade students are required to have a Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis (Tdap) booster within the last 5 years, as well as one Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine. All incoming Kindergarten students will need completed Tdap, MMR, and Varicella. Please provide a copy of the record to the school prior to the first day of school in August.

6. If your 5th-8th grade student will play a sport, or 4th grade student will play football in the upcoming school year, a physical is required. Physicals must be done on or after June 1, 2019. Physicals done prior to this date cannot be accepted.

Thank you for allowing us to care for your students this year.
