Dear Saint Andrew Families,

This week at Saint Andrew continues with the Breen Tournament and the fun-filled events we have planned at each game.  Tonight, is 4K and 5K night and anyone else who wants to join in the fun!  The first round of talent show tryouts was held today and acceptance letters went home to several incoming Wildcats.  Furthermore, our Lenten Committee is working hard to prepare us for the Lenten Season, a time to FAST – Follow, Accept, Sacrifice and Trust.   Growing up in a very strict Catholic household, I still recall the “dreadful Fridays of Lent” when we could not watch television or listen to the radio. We had to eat “Lenten food” - lentils; shrimp patties; dried corn soup; and “capirotada” (a traditional Mexican bread pudding).  My mother made it all with so much love and I did not appreciate it until I became an adult and grew and learned in my Catholic faith and traditions.
1st Grade Student Recognition Night at the Stephen Breen Tournament
Preschool/Kindergarten Student Recognition Night at the Stephen Breen Tournament
This week I will be attending a principals’ retreat in Muenster, TX from Wednesday – Friday.  It is coming at a perfect time.  Please keep me and all the administrative leaders of our schools in your prayers.  Last but not least, I would like to announce that Mrs. Beverly Watkins, Business Manager, has recently announced her retirement after 29 years of service to Saint Andrew Catholic Church and School. May God bless her and her husband as they prepare to begin this new chapter of their lives together.  Thank you, Mrs. Watkins, for your service to Saint Andrew Catholic School. May God continue to bless our Wildcat students and families.
Emphasis on handwriting instruction is almost nonexistent in many schools today. That is not the case at Saint Andrew. Beginning in preschool, our teachers work diligently with students on pencil grips and correct strokes. Teachers also work with students on body position and posture, as these are critical to handwriting success.
Mrs. Kinsey says, "Pencil grip is very important for students as well as strokes. The students need to understand top to bottom and left to right. It is very important for students to learn to form letters correctly."
In second grade, students learn cursive. Our students are some of the few that still learn cursive today; most educational systems see little value in cursive writing.

Neat handwriting is an important part of doing one's best work. It promotes discipline and teaches children to put forth effort in everything they do.

IMPORTANT SAFETY REMINDERS
Effective March 4, 2019, students can only be dismissed from the front office with individuals who are listed in FACTS/Renweb (designated pick-up). The office staff will not be allowed to release students to individuals based on a phone call or email; the individual must be listed in FACTS/Renweb. This is for the safety of all students. Please contact Mindy Dyer if you need help adding people to your Renweb account.

All visitors on campus will be required to show their driver's license upon arrival. No exceptions. This ensures that all visitors meet the requirements for interacting with students; it also helps us know who is on campus in the event of an emergency.

We ask that parents do not drop off students before 7:30 a.m. All children dropped off before 7:30 a.m. will be sent to the cafeteria for before school care. The safety and security of our students is always a priority.

Remember, no early dismissals from the front office after 2:45pm.
CELEBRATING DR. SEUSS'S BIRTHDAY
NEA’s (National Education Association) Read Across America Day is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2—Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

This week, in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Mrs. Mack and Ms. Alvarez are hosting celebrations for PreK -3 rd grades. Each grade will experience fun and “seussical” activities during their library time. On Friday, March 1, PreK and Kindergarten will help us celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday in a fun-filled and interactive way. We look forward to celebrating with your students! “Oh, the places you’ll go!”

GIRL SCOUT TROOP 3021 NEEDS YOUR HELP
The Project: SAS 8th grade students Gabriella Miranda, Isabella Jovanovic, Valerie Gutknecht, and Annabel Dikes, members of Girl Scout Troop 3021, are working on earning their Silver Award this year which requires 50 hours of service to an organization. This is outside of their required hours for school.

The girls have adopted the Assessment Center at Catholic Charities of Fort Worth and have been diligently working on various projects for them. This center is the temporary home for children who are removed from unsafe situations and waiting for foster homes and also for refugee children who have been displaced from family.
These children have gone through so much and even though the care takers are wonderful, it can be a scary time for them.

The girls want to help make this transition easier for them. They have made craft kits for the kids to do during the holidays, wrote them welcome letters in both English and Spanish, and are now working on a book drive for the kids.

How Can You Help: The Girl Scouts would like to collect new or gently used books for children in grades Kindergarten to 6th. The books can be in both English and Spanish. Collection boxes will be placed in the Front Office area for your child to drop off their donations.

The Goal: They would like to collect 500 books by March 22nd.

These books will bring so many smiles to the faces of these children. This is a simple way to help make a difference in a child's life. Thank your for your donations.
BURNING OF THE PALMS
Saint Andrew Parish's Burning of the Palms will take place immediately after the 8:00 am Mass on Monday, March 4th in front of the Church Office building. The prayer service is very brief and should start around 8:35. (once Mass is over)

Students are encouraged to bring to school their blessed palms that they received last year on “Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion.” Please drop them off in the school office. These palms will be burned and used as the ashes placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday.

MARIAN STATUES
The Spiritual Life Committee at Saint Andrew Catholic School offers two blessed statues to its families:  A statue of Rosa Mystica and an Immaculate Heart of Mary Statue.

Each week (from Wednesday afternoon to the following Wednesday morning) two families will have the opportunity to take these statues home and use them as a source of inspiration, prayer and reflection. The tote bag containing the statue will also have suggested prayers. This special tradition will hopefully be one full of meaning and faith for each of you.   Click herEventse  to sign up.  Email Karen Schroder if you have any questions.
