The American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT) strongly endorses Jake Magel, PT, PhD, DSc, FAAOMPT for the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedics (AOPT). Please consider voting for him in the election beginning August 1st.
Today's healthcare systems are complex, and the need for evidenceābased, innovative, and effective orthopaedic physical therapy care is critical. Research and education are paramount to achieving excellence in and understanding the complexities of clinical practice, and Jake Magel excels in translating research to clinical practice through teaching and scholarship.
Jake is an exemplary leader empowering others to become world leaders in providing musculoskeletal care. He leads by example, having received the AOPT Rose Excellence in Research Award in 2003 and 2017 and the AOPT Best Poster in 2016. Jake's scholarship is recognized in his appointment as a Scholar in the Learning Health Systems Rehabilitation Research Network (LeaRRN) and the University of Utah Vice President's Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholars program. In addition, he was selected as a faculty Fellow of the Center on Health Services Training and Research (CoHSTAR). He is a Fellow of AAOMPT and trained with the US Army Orthopedic Physical Therapy Fellowship Program at Brooke Army Medical Center in Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He was a recipient of the US Public Health Service Commendation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal and was the recipient of the US Public Health Service Citation. As a current Associate Professor at the University of Utah, he will continue to lead our profession in excellence in orthopaedic physical therapy.
Jake is a servant leader who follows the mission of the associations he serves. He was elected Secretary and later Vice-President of AAOMPT and has over 13 years of service on the Board. Additionally, he has served as the AAOMPT Practice Affairs Committee Chair from 2017-2022 and is now the Chair of the AOPT Scope of Practice Workgroup. He has also participated on the Steering Committee of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)/ UnitedHealthcare/Optum Labs to review opioid-related material and grants. His exemplary service to AAOMPT and the physical therapy profession led him to receive the AAOMPT Mennell Service Award in 2018.
