Peninsula Art Academy Presents

PLEIN AIR 2023

Competition & Exhibition

Call to Artists

Come join us to paint the park! This is one of our biggest events of the year. Plein Air means open air painting, done on location outdoors, rather than in a studio.

Painting days are Oct. 13, 14, and 15 (Fri. through Sun.), with painting allowed only between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm each day. All work must be completed on canvases that are officially registered with (physically stamped by) the Peninsula Art Academy. Canvases may be stamped early on Thurs., Oct. 12 from 5-7 pm or on any of the three painting days starting at 8 am.

Please see details below on mediums, locations, and finishing.

The finished pieces will be hung for display and judged after that. Join us Sat., Oct. 21, from 2 to 5pm for the opening reception and award announcements.

DETAILS AND REGISTRATION

This competition is open to artists working in any of the following painting mediums: watercolor, gouache, oil, acrylic, and pastel. No three-dimensional, computer-generated, or charcoal work will qualify.

This event is for work done between 8 am and 5 pm, on Oct. 13, 14, and 15 (Friday through Sunday). Artwork must be created on-site in the true Plein Air style and may not be worked on off-site or generated from reference photos. Styles may range from realism to abstract and must be in keeping with the impromptu style of Plein Air.

Painting may be done in the Village of Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, including the adjoining MetroParks. Please do not enter private property without first getting explicit permission from the owner. We will have additional information about specific locations when you come in to get your canvas stamped.

All work must be completed on canvases that are officially registered with (stamped by) the Peninsula Art Academy in advance. You may wish to get your canvas stamped the evening before painting begins (Thurs., Oct. 12, 5-7pm), but you must wait until 8am the following day (Oct. 13) to begin your work.

Please use the two buttons below to register (including agreeing to all conditions) and pay your entry fee online in advance. This will save time when you come in to get your canvas(es) stamped, so you can go out and start painting! The entry fee is $50 for one piece and $25 for a second piece.

Finished work should be framed and ready to hang, with picture-hanging wire (no sawtooth hangers) properly installed on the back. Please plan for this in advance. Do not sign your work on the front until after judging has been completed.

Each artist may submit either 1 or 2 pieces for jurying, although they may have as many canvases stamped as they like. All officially submitted works are expected to be exhibited (barring the unlikely event that we run out of wall space, in which case the judge will decide). All paintings exhibited will be judged in the competition and will be eligible for awards.

The cash awards will be $1000 for Best in Show, $500 for Second Place, and $250 for Third Place.

The pieces will be judged by Mr. Jose Sacaridiz, with the winning pieces announced at a reception on Sat., Oct. 21, from 3 to 5pm. After that, the exhibit will be available for viewing during regular Peninsula Art Academy hours (Thurs. 12-3pm, Fri.-Sun., 11am-5pm) through Nov. 19.
