OUR VOICES
District 4 - As We Are Now
|
By Carolyn King Arnold
Over the past two years (plus) the COVID 19 outbreak has dramatically changed lives, relationships and the way we conduct business. During that period, like you, I had been searching for ways to cope with and make the unusual, normal. Now as we adjust to the new normal, I introduce to you: “As We Are Now”. Through “As We Are Now” I’ll keep you abreast of the challenges and opportunities our district faces and overcame. I’ll do so by focusing on nine (9) different community interest need categories addressing Districts 4’s short and long-term goals and objectives.

Ali – The Greatest – Round One
“What’s My Name?”
|
By Vincent L. Hall
1967 was turning to face spring and three impressionable boys were fully engaged. Me, Michael Jackson and Prince were all around eight. James Brown had the three of us dancing to a new smash hit ; “Papa’s got a Brand New Bag.” Meanwhile a potent hurricane was predicted for Houston, Texas. This “pretty” poet/pugilist self-named Muhammad Ali publicly rejected his government name, Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.

$100,000 in Grants for Summer Educational Programming Awarded to Nine South Dallas Nonprofits by State Fair of Texas
The State Fair of Texas is proud to announce that $100,000 in grants and sponsorships has been awarded to 9 organizations in the Southern Sector of Dallas during the summer grant cycle of the 2022 year. The State Fair opened this second grant cycle to nonprofit entities in the South Dallas/Fair Park community that provide educational programming opportunities to youth during the summer, bridging the knowledge gap while school is out of session.
“With education at the core of our mission, we believe it’s critical to support the kids in our community, especially in the summertime,” said State Fair of Texas President Mitchell Glieber. “In addition to hosting our signature program, Big Tex Summer Sampler, we support our community partners through grant funding to meet our goal of providing as many high-quality summer learning and enrichment opportunities as possible for students in South Dallas.”
The State Fair of Texas traditionally hosts three grant cycles per year – one in the spring, one in the summer, and one in the fall. The summer grant cycle received highly qualified and competitive applications this year. Applications are reviewed by a committee comprised of diverse stakeholders with expertise in nonprofit and grant review processes. Summer applicants are selected according to their alignment with the Fair’s focus on education and providing educational programming for youth in our neighboring zip codes while school is out of session. Those receiving funding will allocate the money strategically to prevent learning loss and provide programming for youth in the South Dallas/Fair Park neighborhoods. To receive funding, each grantee completed three training sessions presented by the State Fair of Texas and Perot Museum of Nature and Science that provided resources and guidance on science and STEM activities that each agency can utilize when planning their summer programming.

Parents, teachers and community members are refusing to accept the decision of the Oakland school board, district administrators and state officials who are backing them up to permanently close Parker Elementary School in East Oakland after the school year ends this week. The community plan is to “liberate” the school and reopen the school as Parker Community Schools. “We will have resources, programs and classes by and for the community,” according to a flier produced by Parker supporters.

The Path
As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
Will you/they see mine?
