Steven’s Story: A Fresh Start with an EV

undefined

“I drive a lot, and I knew an electric car would make a big difference financially" – Steven M.

For Steven, getting an electric vehicle wasn’t just about transportation—it was about having a reliable car, getting back to work, and moving forward with confidence.

After spending several months without a reliable vehicle, Steven applied to the Driving Clean Assistance Program. “The application was really easy,” he says. “Once I actually got somebody assigned to my file, I was approved, and then I got my contact person who was awesome.”

Getting Back to Work

With support from DCAP, Steven was able to get a Hyundai Ioniq EV. “This was really a true blessing,” he says. “I’m really, really grateful.”

“It’s quiet. It’s nice. It’s fresh. It allows me to do some of the work I wanted to do. I’ve been making deliveries and stuff like that and going to probably even return to doing Uber.”

Saving on Everyday Costs

“I drive a lot, and I knew an electric car would make a big difference financially.” And now, Steven is seeing that impact firsthand. “It puts a lot more money in my pocket with the amount that I was driving,” he says. “I was spending $25, $30 a day, and now it’s down to about half of that.”

More Than Transportation

The car has made a difference personally, too. “It’s given me a confidence boost. I’ve had some things happen in life, especially here recently. And it’s put me in a better mood, I have to say. It’s nice having a nice new car.”

And while the environmental benefits weren’t initially top of mind, Steven has come to appreciate them. “There are no emissions and no oil changes,” he says. “If I drive 30,000 miles a year, that’s a lot of oil changes. Not to mention all the gas that was burned.”

Steve's Advice

For others considering DCAP, Steven encourages them to take an active role in the process. “Stay on top of your file. See where it’s at in the chain if there’s still money that’s even available out there. You know, stay in touch with your counselor.”

“The people that I dealt with, their heart was really into it,” he says. “If I can do it, anybody can do it.”

Building Financial Stability Through Community Partnership

Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS)

This month, we’re spotlighting Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS), a trusted community partner helping families build financial stability through education, counseling, and access to resources. Learn more about SNHS’s work and its partnership with DCAP to connect communities with affordable clean transportation.

Can you tell us about Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services (SNHS) and your mission to help individuals and families achieve sustainable homeownership?

Sacramento Neighborhood Housing Services is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1986. Our mission is to provide opportunities for successful homeownership and strong communities through quality education, affordable lending, supportive partnerships, and dedicated leadership. SNHS serves low- to-moderate income community members seeking to attain or maintain homeownership. We serve populations that are less likely to access affordable housing or become homeowners. In addition to our core services, we support community stabilization and beautification through our annual Dorothy Mae Good Deeds Day event, which will take place this year on September 12.

What are some of the biggest challenges prospective homebuyers face today, and how does SNHS help them overcome those barriers?

Today's prospective homebuyers face steep barriers, chief among them being the mismatch between home prices and income. Tight credit standards, rising rates, and limited housing inventory add further strain. SNHS helps families overcome these obstacles through free one-on-one counseling sessions, where staff evaluate a credit report, complete a budget analysis, and walk buyers through what they can realistically qualify for, required homebuyer education courses, and connections to down payment assistance and rehabilitation funding through programs.
