The Plum Creek Current

Fall 2023

Autumn Fun: Annual Fall Cleanup was a success!

This year's Keep Lockhart Beautiful Annual Fall Clean up was a tremendous success thanks to the hard work of our volunteers. All 42 volunteers rolled up their sleeves and helped remove over 200 pounds of litter from Lockhart City Park and downtown.

It was a fantastic time for everyone and the free breakfast was delicious. The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, a partner to Plum Creek Watershed Partnership, was one of the generous community sponsors for the event. They not only supported the event, but also provided free swag for all the volunteers.

Keep Lockhart Beautiful will continue to host cleanup events like this and more in the coming new year. Stay connected through our social media and check out the Keep Lockhart Beautiful Facebook Page too!

Opportunities in the Watershed

Texas A&M AgriLife Online Homeowner Maintenance of Aerobic Treatment Units Course

Attention Hays County Residents! The Homeowner Maintenance of Aerobic Treatment Units is now available online. This 6 hour online course offers homeowners the knowledge to properly maintain and operate their own aerobic septic system, or aerobic treatment unit (ATU). This fully online course cost $150 per individual.

ATUs use oxygen to breakdown both dissolved and solid constituents contained in your household wastewater, converting them into gases, cell masses and non-degradable material. ATUs can provide a more watershed friendly alternative to traditional septic systems.

In the watershed, only Hays County has approved this course which allows homeowners to maintain their own ATU. For more information on the course, click the link button below.

Become a citizen scientist with Texas Stream Team

Our citizen science water quality monitoring group, The Plum Creek Stewards, is seeking volunteers to test sites throughout the Plum Creek Watershed on a monthly basis.

The water quality data is added to a state-wide database: Texas Stream Team Datamap. This is an amazing effort larger than our watershed, so check it out!

To become a certified monitor, a three-hour training is required. After training, the time commitment is about 1 to 2 hours per month. Contact the Watershed Coordinator if you are interested in becoming a Plum Creek Steward. The next free Standard Core Water Quality Citizen Scientist Training is in San Marcos on Sunday December 10th, 10am to 2pm. Follow the link below to learn more about Texas Stream Team.

The Steering Committee meets once every quarter. Those interested in joining do not need to have a background water quality but a passion to help improve the Plum Creek Watershed.

New members will have to be approved by the current Steering Committee and voted on. For more information about joining the Plum Creek Steering Committee contact the Watershed Coordinator.
