Let's All Wish Sophia AuDuong Good Luck!
Sophia AuDuong, a PNHS senior, is one of only 22 high school students from across the state presenting at the Massachusetts Junior Academy of Science Symposium. This symposium provides talented young researchers the great opportunity to give an oral presentation of their research in front of a panel of judges in order to earn a spot on the Massachusetts junior delegation to the 2016 American Junior Academy annual convention in Washington, DC. The event is open to the public and parents, teachers, and research mentors are welcome to attend and ask questions.
The presentations will be evaluated for scientific merit, experimental design, clarity of presentation, data quality, visuals, creativity, and ability to answer questions. The presentations will be evaluated by a panel of 4 judges and the results of the symposium will be shared at a later date. The top 5 presentations will be selected for abstract submission to the AAAS/AJAS 2016 meeting in Washington, DC.
The symposium will take place on
Saturday, October 17th
from 1:15-4:30
on the MIT campus, on the first floor of building 68 (the Koch Biology building) located at 31 Ames Street in Cambridge. The building is very close to the Red Line Kendall Station T stop on Main Street. If you drive to MIT there are meters right outside the building on Ames Street or on Main Street. The building will be locked. Someone will let you in from the Ames Street entrance that is closest to Main Street starting at 1 P.M.

Cold Spring Arts Integration Project
Cold Spring is so excited to begin the Arts Integration Project this year. This week, third graders integrated ELA and music. Students were able to describe characters in the story "Ghost Gets Dressed" (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Students then created rhythms that followed the patterns in the story and performed it during class. Even with the surprise ending in the story, students still learned a lot about predictions in both ELA and music.

Today Mrs. Costa's full day kindergarten and Mrs. O'Neil's fourth graders completed several apple activities as part of their weekly big friends/little friends activities. Fourth graders helped kindergarteners to make observations using magnifying glasses, weigh their apples using pan balances, and measure the circumference of their apple using string and unifix cubes. It was such a fun activity packed with lots of skills!

Third graders in Mrs. Haynes' class achieved their classroom "gem" goal! Students voted on their reward. A kickball game with Mr. Williams won by a landslide! After last week's rainout, students and Mr. Williams had a blast enjoying perfect weather, exercise and fun on Wednesday afternoon.
If you have visited West Elementary this year you will notice one major improvement to its exterior; a beautiful basketball court featuring a freshly-paved playing surface, new backboards, and nets. As part of their writing curriculum, students in Miss Learning's, Mrs. Haynes', and Mr. Young's classes learned how to write personal letters this week. Using what they learned, third graders then wrote thank you notes to the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation for donating a large portion of the money to fund these courts. While the entire community benefits from this generous gift, West's kids have been able to enjoy playing all sorts of sports on it each day at recess, and they showed how thankful they were in their letters.

PLYMOUTH SOUTH'S ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Hannah Bailey-Field Hockey
The player of the week for Field Hockey is the goalie, Hannah Bailey. Hannah is a senior goal keeper who recently posted two big shutouts. In a strong 0-0 tie to Hanover she recorded 8 saves. A few days later, Hannah shutout Duxbury for a 3-0 win while having 9 saves. Hannah also held strong in a 2-1 win over Hingham with another 8 saves. Playing consistently solid, she is using powerful clears and saves to keep the ball as far from the net as possible. Hannah has been a leader in the back of the field, using effective communication with her teammates all season.
Matt Tirrell-Golf
Matt Tirrell is a senior captain of the golf team. He has been the low scorer in many of the matches. Last week at Waverly Oaks he shot a 39 in a loss to Hingham.
