Sunday, February 15 - Education Hour Continues: Anti-Racism Stories

Our intergenerational series on anti-racism stories continues this Sunday, and will take place upstairs in Room 204. We hope both kids and adults of all ages will join us for this intergenerational series! Note: there will be no Zoom option given the location.

Sunday, February 15 - Thoughts & Facts from the Anti-Racism Action Team

“Prejudice is pre-judgement about another person based on the social groups to which

that person belongs. Prejudice consists of thoughts and feelings, including stereotypes,

attitudes, and generalizations. All humans have prejudice; we cannot avoid it.”

“Discrimination is action based on prejudice. These actions include ignoring, exclusion,

threats, ridicule, slander, and violence.”

“When a racial group’s collective prejudice is backed by the power of legal authority and

institutional control, it is transformed into racism. Racism is a structure, and a structure

in which we have been socialized.”

- Robin Diangelo, White Fragility

Sunday, February 15 - Share the Love: Write for Your Rights!

The Reproductive Rights Action Team invites you to a postcard writing event on Sunday, February 15 starting at 2:30 pm, to protect our access to essential health care in Indiana. There are several bills moving forward right now that threaten Hoosiers' access to healthcare, including essential medications for abortion care. We need to make our voices heard!

We will provide all the materials needed for writing, as well as letter templates for inspiration. The finished postcards will be hand-delivered to the statehouse.

Please bring a box of menstrual hygiene products to the event-- these items will be donated to Fairfield Elementary School.

All are welcome and spread the word! Drop in any time between 2-3:30 pm.

Sunday, February 15 - Fundraiser for Immigrant Mutual Aid Programs

A generous donor has provided the church with t-shirts and tote bags from Wild Unicorn Designs, available to purchase this coming Sunday, February 15 and as long as supplies last. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to mutual aid efforts in Minneapolis that are helping to provide rental and food assistance to immigrant families who are afraid to go to work or otherwise leave their homes because of the continued ICE presence there. Because the federal occupation of the city has gone on for so long, and because many immigrants have been out of work nearly the entire time, money for these kinds of mutual aid programs is running out, and the situation is close to desperate. We appreciate any donations that people are willing to make to help our neighbors in Minnesota.

Tuesday, February 17 - Women's Book Group: The Other Einstein

The next meeting of the Women's Book Group will be Tuesday, February 17 at 11:30 am. We will be discussing the book The Other Einstein, by Marie Benedict.

The Women's Book Group meets on the third Tuesday of each month in the Amistad Room. All self-identifying women are welcome to join the discussion on a drop-in basis or longer term.

Tuesday, February 17 - Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Come one, come all to the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake and Sausage supper on Tuesday, February 17 at 5:30 pm. This is an annual tradition as we prepare to enter the season of Lent and observe Ash Wednesday the following day.

Congregational Life will provide pancakes, sausages, and beverages, all with a festive Mardi Gras theme. Please sign up in the Folsom room if you plan to attend so that we can be sure to have enough food for everyone. All are welcome!

Wednesday, February 18 - Wednesday Night Live

Wednesday Night Live programming continues this Wednesday. At 5:00 pm there will be adult choir rehearsal. At 5:15 pm there will be Lenten Book Study with Rev. Timothy, followed by dinner at 6:00 pm. Handbells will meet at 6:30 pm. All activities are open to anyone in the church, regardless of membership status. Come for activities or just come for dinner and fellowship! The suggested cost for dinner is $10 per person, though no one will be turned away due to the inability to pay. If you plan to come for dinner, please sign up in the Folsom Room in advance so our caterer knows how much food to prepare. Hope to see you there!

The passcode to join Bible Study on Zoom is 773232.

February 18 - April 1 - Lenten Book Study

This year's book study is How to be an Antiracist, by Ibram X Kindi. The book is available through Amazon or Barnes and Noble in either print, digital, or audible format. You can also check out the hardcover edition from the church's Louise Folsom Memorial Library, and Rev. Timothy has a few extra copies for anyone who might need help. This study, led by Reverend Timothy, starts February 18 and concludes April 1, meeting every Wednesday at 5:15 pm in the Chapel.

Wednesday, February 18 - Annual Ash Wednesday Service

The season of Lent begins on Wednesday, February 18, where we will observe the day with our annual Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 pm. Join us in the sanctuary for a service of music, communion, the imposition of ashes, and a brief homily. This service is an opportunity to reflect together about the meaning of the Lenten season, and to enter into it with intentionality and prayer. We hope to see you there. Livestreaming will be available for those wishing to watch virtually.

Thursday, February 19 - Film Screening + Discussion

On Thursday, February 19 at 7:00 pm the Cinema Center is partnering with Indiana Center for Middle East Peace for an opening night screening of "The Voice of Hind Rajab," and a discussion panel with Palestinian experts. In this gripping movie based on real-life events, Red Crescent volunteers work to rescue a child named Hind Rajab trapped in a car under Israeli fire in Gaza. The film earned five stars from The Times, The London Standard and the BBC, and won the Jury Grand Prize at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

Following the movie will be a discussion panel with two Palestinian experts. Daniel Bannoura is a Palestinian theologian and postdoc at the University of Notre Dame. He is the US Advocacy Coordinator for the Bethlehem Institute for Peace and Justice, and co-host of “Across the Divide." Jonathan Brenneman is a Palestinian-American activist and co-founder of Christians for a Free Palestine.

Thanks to sponsorship, tickets for the movie and discussion are $6, and can be purchased at the link below or at the door.

Saturday, February 21 - "Sale" Away with US - YMCA

Plymouth members are partnering with Union Baptist Church Quilt Ministry for the "Active Older Adults Fundraiser" Quilt Showcase and Bake Sale, at the Renaissance Pointe YMCA on Saturday, February 21 from 10 am-3 pm. Stop by to check out the handmade quilts and enjoy a sweet treat!

Saturday, February 21 - Family Festival Tabling Event

Plymouth will be hosting a table at the WMEE Family Festival at the Memorial Coliseum and we need your help! We need enthusiastic Plymouth members to take shifts at our table to welcome visitors, hand out swag, and tell people about Plymouth Church. Last year, over 2000 people attended the event, so this is a great way to reach young families and invite them to check us out!

The event is from 9am-3pm and shifts are two hours. If you would like to sign up for a shift, click the link below.

Upcoming Events

Sunday, March 1 - Church Building Tour

You may be able to find the Sanctuary and Folsom Room without too much trouble, but what about the staff offices? The education wing? The second fellowship hall in the basement or Youth Lounge? Have you ever seen the boiler room or where we store seasonal decorations or the digital organ speakers? It’s been a year since our last building tour, so Rev. Murphy will be offering one again after worship on Sunday, March 1. This main tour will last about 20 minutes, with an opt-in bonus tour at the end for those brave souls who want to see the antic space above the Sanctuary. For the latter, permission forms are required for anyone under the age of 18, as it requires an unforgiving climb up 24 vertical metal ladder rungs (and down again!). Sign-up isn’t required for the base tour. Just plan to gather in the Narthex that day, with the tour beginning 15 minutes after worship concludes.

March 1-6 - Plymouth Meals for Just Neighbors

Our next week to serve dinner at Just Neighbors shelter is coming up starting on Sunday, March 1. Plymouth folks are encouraged to sign up to bring either a main course, side dish, salad or desert on any night that week. If you would like to help, you can sign up online at the link below. Thanks in advance for your help in this important ministry!

Wednesday, March 4 - Dementia Support Group

Many, if not most of us, will at some point or another have a friend or loved one who is living with dementia. That reality is true for members of Plymouth Church, too. We will begin offering a weekly group on Wednesday nights after Wednesday Night Live dinner for those caring for or in relationship with someone with dementia. This group will be led by Rev. January Simpson and will meet in the Chapel starting at 6:45 pm on March 4. No sign up is required; however, if you will be bringing your loved one with dementia, we do need to know that. They will gather separately so that caregivers can speak openly with each other. Please email and indicate your interest to jls@plymouthfw.org.

50th Boar’s Head Celebration

Can you even believe it? Almost 50 years ago, Plymouth Church put on their first Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. The history of our festival is rich. Over the past 49 years, it’s grown into something magical, not just because of the number of people involved, but because it continues to offer something special during the holiday season to a large following of people in the Fort Wayne area and beyond. Boar’s Head is simply a part of many families' holiday traditions.

Planning for the 50th annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival has begun, and we want this year to be something truly special. We are seeking volunteers to help. Below you will find a list of committees that pertain to different areas of Boar’s Head. If you are interested in helping or if you have any ideas or maybe even some memories of past years to share, please contact the committee chair. We’d love to hear from you!

General Announcements

February Book Display - Black History Month

During February, the library table in the Folsom Room is highlighting Black History Month with a special selection of books. Featured titles include “A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power,” recently reviewed in the Journal-Gazette by Reverend John Garner. And closer to home is the book “African-Americans in Fort Wayne: The First 200 Years”. Stop by, take a look, and consider checking one out — there are several other great books on the table as well!

The Little Library

Special thanks to the Property Board, John Hoelderle and Bill Balasia for their efforts to revamp and restore The Little Library on the church's west side.

The Little Library will be filled with books anyone can take, borrow, or add to at any time. Nice work, all!

...Speaking of Libraries...

The Louise Folsom Memorial Library, between the Folsom Room and the church sanctuary, is a fantastic resource and collection of works on theology, bible study, justice, biblical commentary, personal wellness, history and more. Feel free any time to browse the collection. You can also check out books from the library and take them home! Stop in and take a peak after service, or during the church building tour on Sunday, March 4!

Plymouth Congregational Church Satisfaction Survey Responses

The results of last September's satisfaction survey are in and shared here for your review. Thank you to everyone who provided input. The results are quite positive!

Adult Nursery Volunteers Needed

Plymouth is looking for a few more adult volunteers to assist in the nursery on Sunday mornings, starting in the new year. Volunteers are scheduled to assist no more than once a month and are needed during the Sunday morning worship hour. If you would like to help out, please see Rev. Ofner-Seals or email her at smo@plymouthfw.org.

Safety Attendants

The Safety Committee is looking for a few good folks to serve as Safety attendants periodically during worship services. An attendant will greet late comers in the Narthex during worship, be responsible for communicating with the office in the event of a medical emergency or natural disaster, aid in fire and tornado drills, and more. If you would like to assist in this endeavor, please sign up at the following link.

Open Prayer in the Sanctuary

For a time of personal prayer, the sanctuary will be available Tuesday through Thursday during office hours. Please enter through the Berry Street office entrance and check in with our receptionist. Contact Jake Slone at (260) 423-9424 or jss@plymouthfw.org with any questions.
