Sunday, March 8: Evangelism Chapel Class

This week, Rev. Murphy will be leading a second Chapel class on the theme of “Evangelism.” What is it? What are ways it’s been hurtful? What are ways it’s been helpful? If we agree that we have good news worth sharing, how might we go about doing that? Come learn, talk, and hopefully, share!

Chapel Class is open to all adults at 9:00 am every Sunday, in person or on zoom. The password for zoom is 247302.

Sunday, March 8 - Thoughts & Facts from the Anti-Racism Action Team

"The height of all absurdities is when one racial group has far fewer resources than another racial group due to the history of racism, and the popular proposal to remedy this historic inequity is providing the same resources to these two unevenly resourced groups. This will never add up to equity or justice."

-- Ibram X. Kendi

Sunday, March 8 - Lenten Reflection from the Green Team

DURING LENT, THE GREEN TEAM ASKS THAT WE LOOK AT THE LAND, WATER, AND NATURE THAT SURROUND US, AND TO LEARN NOT ONLY THE HISTORY, BUT OUR RESPONSIBILITY IN HONORING AND CARING FOR IT.

Many trees were vital to the Miami Tribe in Indiana because of their usefullness. The

black walnut and hickory were used for food and tools. The maple tree provided syrup.

The willow and sycamore were used for medicine and shelter. The wood of the oak tree

was used for building, tools, and the acorns were processed for flour.

Native deciduous trees include oaks, maples, hickory, sycamore, beech, tulip, black

cherry, white ash, cottonwood and hackberry. Native evergreen trees include eastern

white pine, eastern red cedar, and tamarack/eastern larch.

However, if you are thinking about restoration or landscaping, the white oak, red maple, river birch, tulip tree, and red cedar are local friendly.

WE GIVE THANKS TO THE TREES THAT PROVIDE SO MUCH FOR US, AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO PLANT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT.

The book is available at local bookstores, for order online, or for checkout through Allen County Public Library.

The suggested cost for dinner is $10 per person, though no one will be turned away due to the inability to pay. If you plan to come for dinner, please sign up in the Folsom Room in advance so our caterer knows how much food to prepare. Hope to see you there!

The passcode to join the book study on Zoom is 773232.

Upcoming Events

Sunday, March 15 - Family Social and Bowling at House of Pins

Plymouth families with children under 18 are invited to a social afternoon of bowling, snacks and getting to know one another! We'll have a private room at House of Pins (2010 Sundown Ln, Fort Wayne, IN 46808), Sunday, March 15, 2-5 pm, where we can play and chat. Please RSVP to Katie Watson (kjwatson4@gmail.com).

Sunday, March 15 - Chapel Class on Criminalizing Homelessness

Recently, the Indiana General Assembly passed a law that would make it illegal for unhoused people to camp or sleep outside in public places. This law effectively criminalizes being homeless, as many individuals have nowhere else to go. On Sunday, March 15, Mary Ann Mings, who runs the homeless day shelter out of InAsMuch Ministries will join us for a discussion about what this law really means, what it does, and how we can best help our unhoused neighbors at this time.

Sunday, March 15 - Special Offering: One Great Hour of Sharing

Imagine the difference we can make when we join together with other people of faith who are giving to the same cause. For over 75 years, One Great Hour of Sharing has been allowing congregations to share out of their abundance with those who need assistance. You will have the opportunity to join multiple denominations and Church World Service to do just that as Plymouth Church participates in the One Great Hour of Sharing Special Offering on Sunday, March 15.

Your support to this annual focus on mission enables our church and our ecumenical partners to make a difference in lives and communities around the world. One Great Hour of Sharing understands the needs -- immediate and long-term -- and are there when the needs are most pressing. By giving generously, you bring life forth in desolate places. By giving generously, you provide spaces for others to share their expertise and sustainable approaches to farming. By giving generously, you share hope today, tomorrow, and well into the future.

Tuesday, March 17 - Women's Book group

The WBG book for this month is The Yiddish Policemen's Union, by Michael Chabon. The book is, "At once a gripping whodunit, a love story, an homage to 1940s noir, and an exploration of the mysteries of exile and redemption."

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 17 in the Amistad Room at noon. We welcome anyone who self-identifies as a woman to drop in and join the discussion!

Saturday, March 21 - Greenway Trail Clean-Up

Plymouth’s Green Team has adopted a section of the River Greenway Trail. This means that we are responsible for clean-up and maintenance of this section of the trail three times each year. Our next clean-up day will be Saturday, March 21 from 10:00 am to noon. Please sign up on the board in the Folsom Room.

Parking is available at Towles Intermediate School (420 E. Paulding Rd) or at Tillman Park Trailhead (600 E. Tillman Rd). A Green Team member will be waiting at each parking location. Trash bags, gloves, and pick-up sticks will be provided. Bring a grabber if you have one!

All ages are welcome! The distance is approximately two miles. Please join us if you can and help us live into our Earthwise covenant!

Sunday, March 22 - Plymouth Music Series: Catharsis at the Keys

Featuring the Allen Digital concert organ and the Steinway Grand in the Sanctuary, Plymouth Congregational Church's music director Maestro Robert Nance will perform "Catharsis at the Keys: A Keyboard Concert," a delightful program of keyboard favorites. The concert is part of the Plymouth Music Series, and is free and open to the public. It starts at 2 pm in the Plymouth Church Sanctuary.

Tuesday, March 24 - Singing Resistance Gathering

Join fellow Fort Wayne residents for an evening of singing resistance! We will gather for a simple supper and an evening of singing together from 6-8 pm at Plymouth Church. A sign-up sheet is located in the Folsom Room.

Singing Resistance is building a mass movement of singers to protect and care for our communities in the face of rising authoritarianism. We welcome everyone into the movement for collective liberation. We are fighting for a future in which all people - Black, Brown, Indigenous, immigrant, trans, queer, disabled, poor - and the Earth are safe and sovereign. Through song, we can refuse to obey what authoritarianism wants us to do - get small, numb out, and forget. Instead, we will mobilize our communities in public, we will feel, and we will tell the truth of the violence and of the resistance.

Seeking Volunteers for the 50th Boar’s Head Celebration

Can you even believe it? Almost 50 years ago, Plymouth Church put on our first Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. The history of our festival is rich. Over the past 49 years, it’s grown into something magical, not just because of the number of people involved, but because it continues to offer something special during the holiday season to a large following of people in the Fort Wayne area and beyond. Boar’s Head is simply a part of many families' holiday traditions.

Planning for the 50th annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival has begun, and we want this year to be something truly special. We are seeking volunteers to help. Below you will find a list of committees that pertain to different areas of Boar’s Head. If you are interested in helping or if you have any ideas or maybe even some memories of past years to share, please contact the committee chair. We’d love to hear from you!

General Announcements

Donation to Immigrants in Minneapolis

Thank you to everyone who purchased a t-shirt, tote bag, or both, and donated to our fundraiser for immigrants in Minneapolis. We raised a total of $1,175, all of which has been sent to Minneapolis to assist immigrants with rent, food, utilities, and other necessities as they recover from many weeks being trapped in their homes, unable to go to work. Minneapolis is facing a housing crisis as many of those immigrants who couldn't go to work now face eviction, so this money is desperately needed and will do much good!

Still, the crisis is not over. If you would like to make your own individual donation, click the button below:

Pride at Plymouth Task Force Volunteers

Pride at Plymouth will be here in just a few short months. The Evangelism and Marketing Board is recruiting volunteers for a Pride Task Force that will start in March to plan and implement this June event. You do not need to be a church member to join the task force. Anyone is welcome who wants to be part of creating a day that honors our open and affirming covenant. To volunteer or to get more information contact Rev. Sara (smo@plymouthfw.org) or Vicky Pogue (vlpogue@gmail.com).

Book Recommendations Welcomed!

Do you have a book you’d love to see on the shelves of our church library? We welcome your suggestions! Simply click the link below to recommend a title for the Louise Folsom Memorial Library to consider adding to its collection. You’ll be asked to provide the book’s title and author, and you’re invited to include a brief comment sharing why you think it would be a meaningful addition. Help us continue building a library that inspires, informs, and enriches our entire church community.

Adult Nursery Volunteers Needed

Plymouth is looking for a few more adult volunteers to assist in the nursery on Sunday mornings, starting in the new year. Volunteers are scheduled to assist no more than once a month and are needed during the Sunday morning worship hour. If you would like to help out, please see Rev. Ofner-Seals or email her at smo@plymouthfw.org.

Safety Attendants

The Safety Committee is looking for a few good folks to serve as Safety attendants periodically during worship services. An attendant will greet late comers in the Narthex during worship, be responsible for communicating with the office in the event of a medical emergency or natural disaster, aid in fire and tornado drills, and more. If you would like to assist in this endeavor, please sign up at the following link.

Open Prayer in the Sanctuary

For a time of personal prayer, the sanctuary will be available Tuesday through Thursday during office hours. Please enter through the Berry Street office entrance and check in with our receptionist. Contact Jake Slone at (260) 423-9424 or jss@plymouthfw.org with any questions.
