Sunday, October 5 - Genres of the Bible Chapel Class

Starting this Sunday, October 5, Rev. Sara Ofner-Seals will be leading a two-week series on the genres of the Bible. We will discuss how different genres within the Bible demand different modes of interpretation, and how to read the Bible, not literally, but literarily.

Chapel Class is open to all adults at 9:00 am every Sunday, in person or on zoom. The password for zoom is 247302.

Sunday, October 5 - Special Offering for 'Neighbors in Need'

On Sunday, October 5th, we will be collecting our Neighbors in Need Special Offering.

Plymouth Church has supported this important offering in the past, and the Benevolence Committee appreciates your consideration to do so this year. You may give in person in church via cash or check (please use the special offering envelopes provided), or online anytime at www.plymouthfw.org. You can read more information about Neighbors in Need here.

Wednesday, October 8 - Wednesday Night Live

Wednesday Night Live programming continues this Wednesday. At 5:00 pm there will be adult choir rehearsal and children's choir rehearsal. Bible Study with Rev. Timothy will begin at 5:15 pm, followed by dinner at 6:00 pm. Handbells will meet at 6:30 pm.

All activities are open to anyone in the church, regardless of membership status. Come for activities, or just come for dinner and fellowship! The suggested cost for dinner is $10 per person, though no one will be turned away due to inability to pay. If you plan to come for dinner, please sign up in the Folsom Room in advance so our caterer knows how much food to prepare. Hope to see you there!

Upcoming Events

Sunday, October 12 - Welcoming Group for Prospective Members

Are you interested in becoming a member at Plymouth Church? Our next Welcoming Group will meet Sunday, October 12, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Amistad Room. If your faith journey is leading you to explore becoming a member, this is a one-time required session. Whether you are confident, confused, or curious, our time together is focused on orientation, conversation, interpretation, and exploration. It is an opportunity for you to ask questions and to meet others who are considering affirming their formal relationship with Plymouth Church, UCC. A light lunch will be provided, and childcare is available upon request. Please RSVP to Rev. Sara Ofner-Seals at smo@plymouthfw.org if you would like to attend.

Wednesday, October 15 – Book Presentation and Signing by Dr. Timothy Lake

The Rev. Dr. Timothy Lake, pastor of Union Baptist Church in Fort Wayne and a regular participant in the annual MLK, Jr. interfaith service, has a new book out! It’s entitled The Power of Love and Democracy in the Philosophies of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cornel West. Dr. Lake has agreed to do a presentation and book signing here at Plymouth on Wednesday, October 15 at 6:45 pm in the Chapel following Wednesday Night Live dinner. The book looks at King’s and West’s thought on the ideals of democracy and their critiques of its practice in America, exploring how love is inseparable from justice in a democratic society. We hope to see you there!

Saturday, October 18 - River Greenway Clean-Up

Plymouth’s Green Team has adopted a section of the River Greenway Trail. This means that we are responsible for clean-up and maintenance of this section of the trail three times each year. Our next clean-up day will be Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 am-11:00 am. Please sign up on the board in the Folsom Room.

Parking is available at Towles Intermediate School (420 E. Paulding Rd) or at Tillman Park Trailhead (600 E. Tillman Rd). A Green Team member will be waiting at each parking location. Trash bags, gloves, and pick-up sticks will be provided. Bring a grabber if you have one!

All ages are welcome! The distance is approximately two miles. Please join us if you can and help us live into our Earthwise covenant!

Sunday, October 19 - Euchre Tournament and Yahtzee Extravaganza

Mark your calendars - Plymouth’s annual Euchre Tournament and Yahtzee Extravaganza is Sunday, October 19 right after Sunday service. If you don’t play Euchre but do want to play Yahtzee and hang out please come! Lunch will be provided. Let Bill Lambert know if you have a food allergy or other special dietary need (billlmbrt@gmail.com). Please be sure to RSVP on the signup sheet in the Folsom Room. We will need an accurate count for food.

Tuesday, October 21 - Women's Book Group: "Doppleganger"

October's choice for Plymouth's Women's Book Study is Naomi Klein's Doppelganger: A Trip Into The Mirror World.

Naomi Klein is an influential social critic, a perceptive analyst of what branding, austerity, and climate profiteering have done to our societies and souls. In this book she describes her disquiet with having a doppelganger, Naomi (Wolf). From that situation, she constructs a worldview within which to understand and potentially heal society's current divisions.

As always, WBS welcomes anyone identifying as a woman to join our discussion. We'll meet in the Amistad Room at noon on Tuesday, October 21.

Wednesday, October 22 - Progressive Christianity 101 Series

Rev. Ofner-Seals and Rev. Murphy will be co-leading a five-week series on Wednesday evenings on progressive Christianity starting Wednesday, October 22. The gatherings will meet for one hour starting at 6:45 pm in the Chapel. This educational series is designed for newcomers and anyone who would appreciate a refresher. Topics will include: 1) the authority of the Bible and experience, 2) images of Jesus, and the death and resurrection of Jesus, 3) different conceptions of God, and how we understand other religious traditions 4) the connection of social justice with our understanding of the gospel, and 5) sin and salvation. We look forward to seeing you there!

General Announcements

“Waste Watcher” Brochures

The Green Team has placed “Waste Watcher” brochures from Allen Co. Department of Environmental Management on the display counter in the Folsom Room. These are for anyone needing a refresher on where to recycle all kinds of waste and toxic items.

Volunteers Needed for Nursery and Children's Fellowship Time

We are seeking adult volunteers to help out with Children's Fellowship Time and to assist in the nursery on Sunday mornings. If you like working with kids, this job is for you! Volunteers help once a month or less, either in the nursery or with Children's Fellowship Time, during the Sunday morning service. To volunteer with children, you must have been attending Plymouth services for at least six months, but you do not have to be an official member. Volunteers are also required to submit to a background check. If you are interested, please email Rev. Ofner-Seals at smo@plymouth.org

Safety Attendants

The Safety Committee is looking for a few good folks to serve as Safety attendants periodically during worship services. An attendant will greet late comers in the Narthex during worship, be responsible for communicating with the office in the event of a medical emergency or natural disaster, aid in fire and tornado drills, and more. If you would like to assist in this endeavor, please sign up at the following link.

Open Prayer in the Sanctuary

For a time of personal prayer, the sanctuary will be available Tuesday through Thursday during office hours. Please enter through the Berry Street office entrance and check in with our receptionist. Contact Jake Slone at (260) 423-9424 or jss@plymouthfw.org with any questions.
