Shelter suspends cat adoptions, turn-ins

The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center has suspended cat viewing, adoptions, and owner turn-ins until further notice to contain cases of an upper respiratory infection affecting some of the cats in its care.

Dog viewing, adoptions, and turn-ins will continue as usual. And residents can still take advantage of the Dog Days of Summer Adoption Special through Sept. 30. The special reduces the dog adoption fee from $75 to $50. The fee includes sterilization, the first set of vaccinations, a complete physical exam, a City dog license, and a microchip implant at no additional charge.

“Please be patient as we take precautions to limit the spread of this upper respiratory infection to ensure we can resume cat adoptions as soon as possible,” Animal Care Supervisor Arleen Garcia says.

The shelter currently has a wide variety of dogs in its care, making it a great time to adopt. Foster families are also needed to help free up space at the shelter during its busy summer season.

Potential fosters must fill out an application, provide proof of rabies vaccinations for any pets in their home, and allow staff to ensure the foster will be a good match in their home. The shelter provides foster families with food and supplies to support the foster animals in their care.

The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center is located at 6799 E. Highway 90. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. For more information, call the shelter at (520) 458-4151.

Extraordinary Activities

The City of Sierra Vista is partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Sierra Vista to expand its annual holiday tree lighting event in December.

The Kiwanis Club is raising funds to purchase a 35 foot tall Christmas Tree that will serve as the centerpiece for the annual holiday festivities. The tree lighting event was expanded in 2019 to include artificial snow and an ice skating rink. The City received a great response from the public and plans to further enhance the festivities. Stay tuned for more news as we approach the holiday season.

Uncommon Recreation

Take on a 5k or half marathon on Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Sierra Vista Sunrise Rotary Club's 9th Annual Rising Sun Run.

The course begins and ends at Huachuca Mountain Elementary School, with the half marathon route extending all the way up to the entrance of Ramsey Canyon Preserve. Sign up by Oct. 1 to take advantage of discounted rates! Proceeds support the club's youth vocational scholarships, youth leadership and skills development programs, and service projects.

Social Snapshot

Have you heard a rumor that the City is cancelling upcoming fall events due to COVID-19? That's just not the case, as we shared on our Fact or Fake page this week. The City is partnering with the Huachuca Art Association to host a Vineyards in the Park event on the first day of Art in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 2. We're also looking forward to the return of Oktoberfest, National Night Out, and the Veterans Day Parade, to name a few of our favorite fall events.

City Announcements

All City facilities will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Monday’s trash pickup will shift to Tuesday, Sept. 7, and Tuesday’s pickup will move to Wednesday, Sept. 8. No special pickups will be available on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday pickups are unaffected by the holiday.

Numerous parking violations have been reported to the Sierra Vista Police Department recently in the neighborhoods around local elementary schools during student pick-up and drop-off times. Please remember to park a drive with care around neighborhood schools. Learn more.
