Results of the 2023 Point-in-Time Count and CRC's Commitment to our Unsheltered Neighbors

By John Van Cleef, CEO, Community Resource Center

The 2023 Point-in-Time Count data reveals a 22% increase in homelessness in San Diego County. The numbers remind us of the urgent need to provide comprehensive support for our unsheltered neighbors.

The data also reveals a 10% reduction in the unsheltered population in Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Oceanside, showcasing the impact when cities and nonprofits work together. So, what are we going to do to move forward?

DV Training Class Update

CRC's 40-Hour DV Advocate Training five consecutive Friday classes began June 9. We recently asked CRC's DV Prevention & Education Manager, Luis Canseco, to give an update on how the classes are going:

"Our group of 27 people has been incredibly engaged. I appreciate hearing everyone's unique perspectives and experiences, as it enriches the learning experience for all of us.

I'm grateful for our partner agencies who have shared their expertise with us. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to this training."

Thank you to Habitat for Humanity!

Habitat and CRC partnered earlier this month to paint the exterior of the Transitional Housing Units, Therapeutic Children’s Center, and our Transitional Housing office. We had a volunteer group of twenty teen boys + moms plus eight of their regular volunteers and San Diego Habitat for Humanity (SDHFH) staff that worked on this project the first week in June.

Since then they have offered to donate two playhouses and two garden boxes to make our patio look brighter and more colorful 😊

We are so excited for the completion of this project which will conclude in early July.

Funding from our partners supports CRC’s mission to help our neighbors create

paths to healthy food, stable homes and safe relationships.

Capital Campaign

Campaign Spotlight: Sheri Seipel-Burtt and Ken Burtt

We are shining the spotlight on Sheri and Ken, who have committed their support to the Campaign. Sheri is a longstanding and dedicated CRC volunteer.

By Sheri Seipel-Burtt

When my husband, Ken, and I retired to San Diego eight years ago, I was looking forward to having more time for volunteering and began searching for opportunities. Luckily, I found CRC.

Making a Difference

I was drawn to CRC for their commitment to preventing hunger and homelessness, and I started volunteering weekly in the Food and Nutrition Center. It was exactly what I was looking for - the opportunity to interact directly with clients as I helped them navigate our food pantry. I heard their stories and knew that CRC was making a difference in their lives. My hope was that my attention, help and smile made their day a little better.

“Making the world a better place has always been important to me, and I found volunteering a satisfying way for me to contribute to that goal.” – Sheri

Wanting to Do More

Soon, I wanted to do more. I jumped at the chance to get involved with Holiday Baskets and have coordinated the volunteer schedule for this program for several years. I have also taken on other assignments, including being a CRC ambassador, where I can talk about the organization and its mission at various events.

Making a Lasting Impact

With the launch of the capital campaign, my husband and I recognized we have the capacity to provide critical financial support, in addition to the volunteering hours I was already contributing. This campaign, which will provide an updated and expanded campus, was the perfect motivator, and Ken and I are pleased to be contributors to this project. We know our gift will help equip CRC for the future and increase the positive impact it has on our community.

At 18 months into the capital campaign, we are at $6.195 million in total gifts and pledges raised – 59% towards our $10.5 million campaign goal.

If you’d like to learn more about CRC’s capital campaign, how you can support our shared vision for a new campus, and what naming opportunities are available, please visit the campaign website or send an email to OneHeart@crcncc.org.
