School Counselors To Start Signs of Suicide Prevent With Grade 9
Starting this Monday (3/25), students in the Freshman Class will be participating in the SOS Signs of Suicide prevention program. This program is run annually with the Freshman Class as a way for the school counselors to connect with students their first year of high school and talk about what to do if they are concerned about themselves or someone else, and identify who their supports are to help.
Our goals in participating in this program are:

  • To help our students understand that depression is a treatable illness
  • To explain that suicide is a preventable tragedy that often occurs as a result of untreated depression
  • To provide students training in how to identify serious depression or potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
  • To impress upon youth that they can help themselves or a friend by taking the simple step of talking to a responsible adult about their concerns
  • To help students know whom in the school they can turn to for help, if they need it

We strongly believe that all students should participate in this informational program. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about the program please reach out to the counseling office. If you haven’t already, please complete the consent form giving permission for your child to participate (parents of 9th grade students). If you do not wish your child to participate, please indicate that on the form and your child will be given an alternative place to go during the presentation.
Sanborn Receives Grant To Offer NECC Scholarships For 2019-2020 Year
Earlier this year, Sanborn Regional High School announced a new partnership with Northern Essex Community College that allows students in the district to take NECC classes at the Haverhill campus for a reduced cost of $375 per class. Sanborn plans to run a bus daily to and from NECC so students can take classes during the school day.

Today, SRHS is excited to announce that it has been awarded a $20,250.00 grant to be used to provide scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year to offset the NECC tuition for families. Students interested in being considered for a scholarship must notify School Counseling Director Heidi Leavitt by Friday, March 29th by email at [email protected]. Students are required to take the Accuplacer exam at NECC and receive a qualifying score in order to be accepted into the program before May 1, 2019. After that date, the school will send information to accepted Sanborn students on how they can apply for a scholarship.
Senior Success Day Information
Senior Spotlight: Bridget Abney
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by Teacher Dee Hambucken
Bridget Abney is quite simply a marvelously unique student who makes Sanborn proud! She is humbly intelligent, relentlessly talented, and incredibly kind. Bridget spends her time in a variety of pursuits, but one thing is clear: she does not waste it.

Working with Bridget last year on Women and War showed me her level of dedication to her peers as their student director. She had many insightful comments for the actors, and they took her advice to heart. Bridget has been an active participant in Sanborn’s Drama Club since the beginning of her freshman year, and she has certainly left her mark.

The thing that I like most about Bridget is her determination to understand people and to make the world better. She has lent me books and movies, fodder that has sparked vivid conversations, all with the human spirit as a common thread. I have no doubt that she will do the same in campus coffee shops in the coming years. She is well read and well rounded, which will make her a welcome addition to whichever college she decides to attend.

Having had the pleasure of working with Bridget three out of her four years at Sanborn as her French teacher, I can vouch for her inquisitive nature that fuels her ambition to learn. From what other teachers have added, she clearly has left the same impression everywhere.

Science teacher Liz Richardson said “Bridget always considers the big picture when participating in class or school activities. She is the secretary of the National Honor Society this year. She is very involved with the Fremont public library and the End 68 hours of hunger program. The current Families in Transition drive for hygiene items was originally her vision and she made sure that we followed through by making the connection between the organization and our school. This fall, after helping with the beehive in AP Biology, she decided to enroll in a local beekeeping course and will hopefully be keeping her own beehive at home this summer. Her perpetual curiosity is inspiring.”

Social Studies teacher Jerry Wolbert added, “Bridget is absolutely wonderful!  It has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to have Bridget as a student. Even better were the casual conversations we have had over the past two years. It brightens my day every time Bridget stops by to chat about anything from serious to silly. She is going to be missed, but a bright future lies ahead, no doubt about that!”

Katie Graham had this to say, “I've truly enjoyed having Bridget in my Advisory the past two years. I first met her in Creative Writing class her Sophomore year and am amazed at how she has grown into a unique, caring person. One of my favorite memories was our Creative Writing Club trip to the Mark Twain House in Hartford, Connecticut. I can't wait to see what she accomplishes in the future.”

Former theatre director and English teacher Evan Czyzowski said, “Bridget is a truly curious explorer of the world. She traveled on a school trip to Poland and created and art and research project from that trip that has set the standard for travel ELOs at Sanborn and for ELO programs across NH. As a student, she is an intellectual force to be reckoned with and often sets the fast pace of class. All of her amazing accomplishments have also been matched by her incredible abilities as an actor, for which her skills have been recognized by receiving an NHETG, state acting award. Look out world, here comes Bridget!”
Bonne chance, Bridget!
Senior Spotlight: Hannah Terlizzi
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by Teachers Marissa Vitolo and Nicole St. Jean
Hannah is a thoughtful and diligent young lady. Though she is quiet and polite, she has an incredible amount of drive. She takes academic risks and is a conscientious student who sees a lot of value in her education here at Sanborn. As an English student, she works well with others, actively seeks feedback on her writing, and her work ethic is a role model for her peers. In Digital Fine Arts, Hannah quietly worked, successfully creating some nice projects using Photoshop, paper, and paint.

During her time at Sanborn, Hannah has made quite an impression on many of her teachers. Dr. Young writes, “Hannah is a friendly young lady whom I have had the enjoyment of getting to know for three years of math, science, and advisory. She conscientiously completes her work in class and advocates for herself when she needs some assistance. Hannah is also the 'bodyguard' when I need her & her BFF to do some errands for me. Those two always return safely because I know that Hannah scares away the dragons.”

“She is a great student. She works hard to do amazing work,” says Mr. Adams.

Mrs. Michelle Wheeler says of Hannah, “She may be quiet, but within that quietness, she is an academic powerhouse. She looks for new ways to approach a problem and applies peer and teacher feedback to improve her work and deepen her understanding. In addition to being a good student, she is so sweet! Hannah will work with anyone and is always helpful and understanding.”

We have both enjoyed getting to know Hannah the past couple of years and wish her the best of luck in her post-high school endeavors. She will no doubt be successful in her studies of adolescent psychology. She plans to start at Great Bay Community College then transfer to SNHU. We know she’ll go on to do great things! Best of luck, Hannah!
Senior Spotlight: Hope Kimball
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Mark Giuliucci
When Hope Kimball dreams about the future, she sees herself combining the two things she cares about most: helping children and being creative. “I love art, and I love working with little kids,” Hope says. “So I decided to bring them together and become an art therapist.”

Art therapists help people work through trauma, illness, and other issues through artistic self-expression. “If people can use art to say what’s bothering them, they can understand things better and maybe find ways to deal with their problems,” Hope says. “It calms and soothes people, and it can be pretty powerful.”

Hope already has begun preparing for her future. She is working at a daycare center after school, and plans to enroll this fall at NHTI. “They have a great special education program,” Hope says. “That is the first step that I need to take.” Hope says she’ll need about six years of schoolwork and on-the-job experience as a special educator in schools before she’s ready to become an art therapist.

Art has always played a big role in Hope’s life. She especially enjoys painting in acrylics and water color, and has a growing interest in photography as well. “Art just puts my mind in a different place,” she says. “It helps me see things much more clearly.”

Art teacher Jillian Swist praises Hope’s friendliness and artistic ability. “To my delight, Hope enjoys spending most of her day at the center studio table in the art room with multiple paint palettes, a handful of brushes, and canvases spread out around her,” Ms. Swist says. “Watching Hope’s creative process is simply enjoyable. Hope’s artwork reflects her inner energy, and the sheer speed in which her paintings take form is exhilarating.”

Hope says she would like to work in a non-traditional setting. “I don’t really want to work in a school building,” she says. “I think it would be better to work in a hospital, with really sick children who are there for a while and really need therapy.”

Hope says she’ll remember her time at Sanborn for the relationships she’s built with faculty members. Teachers who care about students, she says, showed her that education is important and rewarding.

School librarian Mark Giuliucci praises Hope’s outlook on life. “It’s obvious that she cares about the people around her,” he says. “She is always aware of how people are feeling, and has a natural way of making people feel better. It seems that art therapy would be a perfect career path for her.”
Senior Spotlight: Josh Mahoney
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by Teachers Connie Carson and Nicole St. Jean
Mrs. Carson had the opportunity to meet Josh when he was in fifth grade but has been most associated with him over the past 3.5 years of high school. Now, as then, he carries himself with purpose, always with an end goal in mind. He is driven to succeed in whatever goal he sets. You can count on Josh to do what he says he will. He's always thought in the literal sense but has really learned to take things as they come more recently. He has grown more than most students Mrs. Carson has had the pleasure to work within the past 16 years at SRHS. He's like an old soul. Just ask him about his music choices and you will agree! He's strong-willed, deliberate in his actions, and is the coolest person to joke around with. Mrs. Carson says, “Josh has a deep intellect; he knows a little about a lot, and is quick to humor, or to make humor when given the opportunity. He is good at so many things, though he won't necessarily agree with that statement. But I can say it from the adult perspective, because like it or not Josh, I know this to be true! Josh notices things that others don't. He sees details that few are aware of at first, and can carry a conversation on with most anyone. He is a pleasure to be around, and I couldn't be more proud of what he has accomplished. I can't wait to see what goals he reaches post-high school. I know he has many to achieve.”

Josh was one of Mrs. St. Jean’s first students when she started teaching at Sanborn three years ago. When she met him in his sophomore year, she was struck by his headstrong personality. He always wants to know the “why” of everything he does. “Josh taught me to be a more purposeful teacher, and for that, I am forever grateful. In the past few years, I have seen incredible growth in Josh’s ability to take academic risks,” writes Mrs. St. Jean. “He’s shown adaptability in where his learning takes place, with whom, and about what. English was probably his least favorite subject when he started high school but, despite that, he has become more openminded. This has allowed him to develop tremendously as a writer, reading, speaker, and listener.”

When Josh graduates, he will encompass so much more than his freshmen year self. He is dedicated, conscientious, intelligent, curious, self-directed, and responsible. Student choice and voice are essential to him. His self-advocacy skills will prove very useful as he enters the working world upon graduation. We are so proud of you, Josh! Congratulations!

She would always take feedback in practice and improved at a rapid rate. She has also been a valuable role model to younger players on the team this year and helped them become more successful. She has been an important member of our Girls basketball team helping them secure a playoff berth in their first year moving up to division 2. In the summer she was a volunteer coach for our Summer Youth Basketball Clinic and helps out at our annual end of the year K-2 rec. Congratulations To Our Latest Staff Members of the Month!
Each month, Sanborn Regional High School recognizes staff members who go “above and beyond” the call of duty to support students. This month, we recognize the following individuals:

Chris Dowd: Mr. Dowd works as a second shift custodian at our school, and he is an amazing member of our Sanborn team! He is always positive and hard working when he comes into classrooms, offering to help teachers with many classroom projects. He is never discouraged by the chaos that classroom spaces may be in when he comes by at the end of the day. Anytime teachers need anything, whether it is something broken in their rooms, extra supplies, or just an extra hand, Mr. Dowd is always there to help them out and he gets things done quickly! He is an extremely hard worker and always goes the extra mile for everyone in the Sanborn community.

Dr. “Doc” Tim Young: Dr. Young, or “Doc”, as he is affectionately called by staff and students , is a math and science teacher at Sanborn. His primary courses are AP Calculus and Physics, although he has taught a variety of courses during his almost decade at the school. He is also a co-advisor for the school’s math team. Doc Young is considered a favorite by many students, and if often asked by students to speak at big school events and honor society inductions. He also has what many would argue as the world’s best collection of socks, and he sports a new and exciting pair each and every day. Doc inspires his students to think bigger themselves, and always dream big in their future.

Congratulations to Mr. Dowd and Doc Young for being recognized as Sanborn’s March/April 2019 Staff Members of the Month!
Spanish Students Help Elementary Schools
Twelve Sanborn Regional High School students from the third-year Spanish classes went to Ellis School in Fremont to read books they made to the first and second grade students. The high schoolers’ books were written in Spanish and included a specific memory from their childhood, as well as what they liked when they were younger. The students recently learned about imperfect and past tense conjugations of verbs. They included this knowledge in their books.

The students brought games which included vocabulary the high schoolers had learned in their classes. Colors, common phrases, fruits, and vegetables were some of the topics covered.
“This was a fun and great experience. I recommend it for the next year. It gives the kids a chance to experience the Spanish culture so that they may be interested in taking a Spanish class in the future”, says junior, Wilson Long.

The students hope that next year's class will get the same opportunity to visit and read to the local elementary schools - and enjoy it as much as they did.

Looking For Donations To Support SAFE SANBORN SENIOR Event
Dear Business Leaders and Sanborn Community Members,

Sanborn Regional High School’s Senior Class of 2019 and the SRHS PTO group are working collaboratively to solicit donations to offset the cost of the end-of-year senior class celebration event. This year, the students have opted for a potluck dinner/games/DJ and dancing here at the school and then a moonlight cruise around Boston Harbor to celebrate their graduation. The event will take place Friday, May 31, the last day of regular classes for Seniors, to kick off their graduation celebration. This class celebratory event is designed to give all interested seniors a fun, safe end of school event to create lasting memories together.
Our fundraising goal is to offset the transportation cost for the bus as well as the dinner/games/DJ event from 7-9pm, prior to the students leaving for the Boston Cruise.

Cash/check donations can be made payable to Sanborn Regional High School PTO or Sanborn Regional High School with a memo of Senior Trip donation. The tax ID number for tax write off purposes for SRHS is 02-0269682. Check can be mailed to SRHS, 17 Danville Rd, Kingston, NH 03848, Attention Brian Stack.

In addition, if you or other fellow co-workers are interested in volunteering to assist with the dinner/pre-party on May 31st, we would love to have you part of the event. You can email our PTO contact, Tammy Gluck, [email protected], to be part of that planning process.

Thank you in advance for supporting our “SAFE SANBORN SENIORS” end of school year celebration

Graduation Has Been Set for June 7, 2019
A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack
Dear Students in the Class of 2019:

It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for Friday, June 7, 2019. Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.

If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. If this is the case all attendees will need a ticket to enter the gym. The week of graduation you will receive eight (8) admission tickets for the gymnasium ceremony. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 8 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than eight.

The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the “probationary” graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 6 and 7. Please also remember that all students must have their $50 class dues ($20 senior dues) paid in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies.

PTO Clothing Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
