Senior Spotlight: Ana Pappalardo
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Julie Healey

Ana Pappalardo is an art enthusiast who plans on entering into a college major next year that focuses on the arts, possibly Rhode Island School of Design. Ana’s passion is drawing wild creatures and other oddities. Besides working on her art, Ana has found interest in playing field hockey and shooting hoops on the basketball court while at Sanborn. Ana loves all kinds of music and she often publishes her rap “song of the day” in her advisory classroom, which is a joy to see.
Ana spends much her time outside of school working her part-time job at Hannaford and hanging out with her dog, Charlie. Family is very important to Ana. She hopes to make her older brothers, Gino and Dominic, proud. Ana believes that family and friends are everything. It is the personal value she cherishes the most.
Ana’s favorite teacher is Ms. Petraitis, who describes her as a sassy, forthcoming young woman with relentless loyalty and fierce compassion. Ana is not afraid to share her opinion or tell people what is on her mind which is something that is truly admirable about her. She is reflective and always striving to be a better version of herself, and Ms. Petraitis has seen her grow in several ways since they met last year.
Good luck in all of your future endeavors, Ana!

Senior Spotlight: Alex Senko

Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

Alex is a student that any teacher would love to have in class. As soon he walked into my class, I knew that he was on a mission to do his best not only in school but in life.
He is a very responsible and polite student. Whenever he missed class, he emailed me asking for his missing work. When he returned to class, he also came to talk with me to make sure that we were on the same page. Alex has a strong passion for soccer. He plays soccer for the school and for a seacoast regional team. Alex works well and collaborates within class, but also outside of class. I had a chance to observe this during a senior Day of Caring. He was helping to build a volleyball court with his team. He never showed any signs of getting tired during the process, and was always smiling.
After high school, Alex wants to pursue a career as a sport analyst. He would like to attend the University of New Hampshire (UNH).
Even though this is my first year knowing Alex, my colleague Mr. McQueen, who has known Alex since Middle school, had this to say: “Alex is the type of student who connects very well to others in the classroom. He is always kind and respectful and helps bring the class together in a fun, but productive way”. I truly agree with Mr. McQueen, as I see all these qualities in class every day. Alex most certainly has all the skills he needs to succeed, whether in college, in the workforce, or in, as he puts it, just “living life”. It will definitely be sad to see him go at the year’s end!

School Counseling Office Updates
|
|
The school counseling office is certainly feeling the frenzy of the holidays from the students though we always try to be the calming center for our school. This month the counseling team descended on the Freshman Literature classes (thank you Ms.Harbel and Ms. Ryan!) and did a fabulous exercise with each class on Naviance. We start the exercise by discussing what Learning Styles are and how they impact various learning preferences, and then move on to complete the Learning Interest Inventory on Naviance, a tool which they would be using over their four years of high school. After completing this inventory and discussing the results, we then discussed what a GPA (Grade Point Average) is, what a transcript is, and how freshman year impacts your overall high school experience. Please talk to your student about what they have learned!
For Sophomores, we are looking forward to having a presentation from SST (the Seacoast School of Technology), our local Career and Technical Education center. Representatives from SST will come in to talk with sophomores about their programs and the benefits of attending them. Sophomores will then travel over to SST later on in the month to visit the programs and ask questions of students who are currently enrolled.
Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors who took the PSAT’s in October should be receiving an email next week alerting them to check their scores. Students can create a college board account using their school email address. We will be handing out the paper score reports when we receive them and students who are interested in learning how to read the reports and more importantly, how to improve their scores, will be able to sign up for FLT’s with the school counseling team to explore the score reports and learn about the tools available to them to improve their scores.
College acceptances are coming in rapidly now. It is truly one of the best parts of this job to watch the pure joy on a students face when they come in to tell us about their acceptances! However, this leads to the next question “how will I pay for this?”. The most important step a family can take in answering this question is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa. This important document is critical in the decision making of schools as they award scholarships and grants which are free money! If you need assistance in completing the FAFSA, unfortunately SRHS counselors are not the experts but the folks at NHHEAF (NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation) at https://www.nhheaf.org/ most definitely are. They will provide one on one assistance in completing the FAFSA if you reach out to them.
Finally, it is important to recognize and remember how challenging the winter months can be for some students. With limited ability to be out in the sun and the ongoing pressures and stress of academics, the winter months can sometimes be overwhelming for kids. If you notice your child seeming sad, withdrawn, more irritable or just off, please reach out to their counselor. We can direct you to resources which might be able to help and it is helpful for us to know so that we too can provide an extra check in to help everyone make it through until spring.

December 21 Will Be an Extended FLT Day
|
|
Dear Students, Teachers, and Parents/Guardians,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to stay up to date in all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on Friday, December 21, 2018. On this day, we will run four 60-minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.
FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students who have been assigned by a teacher to attend.
Students will be assigned an FLT session if they have an IWS on a summative, if they are failing the course, and/or if they are failing one or more competencies. Students who are not assigned to any FLT sessions by a teacher will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Thursday, December 20 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s grades, please contact your child’s teacher(s) by email (preferable) or by phone at (603) 642-3341.
The schedule for December 21 will be as follows.
Please speak with your student(s) to ensure that they take advantage of this additional opportunity to address any missing work or failed competencies.

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
|
Hello Sanborn Community!
It seems that Winter has found us a little early this year! I hope everyone is staying warm. SoRock was very busy over the end of Summer into the Fall! We enjoyed meeting many people at the Ellis School open house and Girl Scout Safety Event in September. In October our towns participated in the DEA Drug Take Back day and some of our Sanborn Leo’s were even able to partner with the police department this year! We participated in the Sanborn Senior Day of Caring and conducted a focus group to gather the important insight of teens on substance misuse trends in their communities. We also launched new sessions of both our P.A.S.T.A Caregiver and grandparent support group as well as Staying Connected to your Teen workshop’s. In October we also partnered with the Austin 17 House, UNH Cooperative Extension and the NH Chapter of the National Society for Suicide Prevention on 2 mental health and suicide awareness events for parents and community members. October ended with Red Ribbon Prevention Awareness week and we kicked off November with presentations to both HS students and the community by International mental and physical health/performance expert John Underwood!
SoRock is a community-based coalition with over a 25-year history of working collaboratively with federal, state and local organizations to help promote, support and sustain healthy choices for families in our communities. We do this by actively working to reduce and prevent alcohol, marijuana, prescription and other drug misuse. SoRock relies on community engagement to be successful in it’s mission. Please visit our website sorocknh.org or follow us on social media @SoRockNH to stay up to date on prevention programming and events in the area. If you would like to get more involved reach out to me at sorocknhcc@gmail.com or give me a call anytime at 603-642-3341 x 196.

PTO Clothing Donation Bins
|
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.
Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
