Senior Spotlight: Becca Olsen
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Kate Krumm
Rebecca Olsen is just incredible. Becca can be found around the school helping other students and bringing laughter to people’s day.  Becca has an amazing sense of humor and is not afraid to be herself. She cracks jokes, shares her love of cats, tells it how she sees it, (with a humorous twist), and is always helpful to other students in explaining what is going on. Becca has added much to the Sanborn Community and is leaving it better than she found it.

Becca has blazed her own path through high school and definitely through our athletic program. She can often be seen either throwing a shot put or a discus, or just working out to increase her strength. Becca’s best throw for shot is 35’10” and is one of her best memories from high school. She threw that PR at a home meet last year, which of course if the best meet to PR in. Her coach Jake Saunders says this about her, “Becca is a rockstar. Works her tail off in practice, and always pushes herself to exceed her full potential.” This is not to say that Becca only throws the shot, she throws the discus and has a PR of 98’1”, her goal this year is to break 100'.

When asked what other events that she has participated in with track her response was this “I got to compete at the 2018 USATF Youth Indoor National Championships this past winter in New York City. The past two years I've competed at the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships (Lawerence, KS, 2017 and Greensboro, NC 2018). I placed 5th at the last NHIAA Division II indoor championship, and 7th at the last NHIAA Division II outdoor championship for shot put. This upcoming indoor season, i'm going to be the 2nd top returnee in the state.”

Can you tell she is one of our top throwers for the Sanborn Track and Field team? Her best memories about track is helping the younger athletes excel in their sport. Helping them with their technique, sitting at meets and cheering them on, giving them helpful hints during practice as well as meets.

I personally have watched Becca grow since freshman year as a person, being one of her track coaches. You get to see a different side of a student being their coach, and this year for the first time her teacher. Becca impresses me on a daily basis with her wit, knowledge and caring of other people. Mr. Cass has this to say about her
“Becca is cool. She's straightforward, hard-working, and kind. I appreciate her snarky sense of humor and willingness to put herself out there just as she is.”

Becca is going to graduate as a NH Scholar and earn a 32 credit college and career diploma with distinction from Sanborn. Becca has made the decision to join Franklin Pierce in Ridge NH for college. She will be majoring in Business Management. She will also be signing a letter of intent at Franklin Pierce to go and be part of their track team on November 20th, 2018. We all wish her the absolute best.
Senior Spotlight: Nathan LeClair
Note: Each week, we will feature 1-2 seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Kathleen Babcock
I recently had the pleasure of meeting one of Sanborn’s quietest, yet finest seniors. Nathan LeClair, a senior from Fremont and four year member of the golf team, loves his time in the shop area where he has taken both Welding I and II and Auto I and II. Ironically he has not taken Woodworking despite his desire to study Forestry at UNH’s Thompson School next fall. Nathan, whose favorite foods are steak and potatoes, hopes to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps as he has been in the forestry industry for 60+ years. Forestry work is a family affair for the LeClair’s involving his grandfather, father, uncle, cousin, and Nathan. While forestry is Nathan’s passion he has several other interests. He used to be a member of Sanborn’s basketball and tennis teams along with volunteering at his local church supporting their food pantry, Christmas dinners, and plays. For several summers, when he wasn’t working alongside his grandfather, Nathan was busy building a race car with his dad and cousin and racing it at both the Hudson and Star Speedways in NH.

Nathan’s teachers all have very positive things to say about him. One of his favorite teachers, Mr. Kelly says, “I have worked with Nate for 2 years in Welding class. Nate is a great kid, reliable, talented, witty. He is my go to guy for serious welding projects. Nate takes what he has learned in class and applies it in the real world. Over the summer he works in his grandfather's lumber business and uses and improves on the skills we have taught him. Nate is a lot of fun to work with and I look forward to the rest of the year with him.”

Miss Chickanosky writes, “Nathan is an excellent math student. He asks great questions to ensure he understands the material and works well with other students. He is often found helping his peers in class!”

His guidance counselor, Mrs. McCarthy, shares, “He is fabulous! While he seems a bit quiet, he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to preserving and maintaining the landscape of the NH Forestry system. He is conscientious, caring, and considerate of others and his loyalty to his friends and family is impressive.”

Nathan’s other favorite teacher, Mrs. Michelle Wheeler, along with ceramics teacher Mrs. Vitolo, and marine biology teacher Mrs. Heather Wheeler are also huge fans of his and appreciate what he adds to their classes.

I’m so glad I took the time to get to know this awesome senior before he graduates this June. If you miss a chance to interact with Nathan, just look for him in the forests of Fremont!

School Counseling Office Updates
The school counseling office is certainly feeling the frenzy of the holidays from the students though we always try to be the calming center for our school. This month the counseling team descended on the Freshman Literature classes (thank you Ms.Harbel and Ms. Ryan!) and did a fabulous exercise with each class on Naviance. We start the exercise by discussing what Learning Styles are and how they impact various learning preferences, and then move on to complete the Learning Interest Inventory on Naviance, a tool which they would be using over their four years of high school. After completing this inventory and discussing the results, we then discussed what a GPA (Grade Point Average) is, what a transcript is, and how freshman year impacts your overall high school experience. Please talk to your student about what they have learned!

For Sophomores, we are looking forward to having a presentation from SST (the Seacoast School of Technology), our local Career and Technical Education center. Representatives from SST will come in to talk with sophomores about their programs and the benefits of attending them. Sophomores will then travel over to SST later on in the month to visit the programs and ask questions of students who are currently enrolled.

Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors who took the PSAT’s in October should be receiving an email next week alerting them to check their scores. Students can create a college board account using their school email address. We will be handing out the paper score reports when we receive them and students who are interested in learning how to read the reports and more importantly, how to improve their scores, will be able to sign up for FLT’s with the school counseling team to explore the score reports and learn about the tools available to them to improve their scores.

College acceptances are coming in rapidly now. It is truly one of the best parts of this job to watch the pure joy on a students face when they come in to tell us about their acceptances! However, this leads to the next question “how will I pay for this?”.  The most important step a family can take in answering this question is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa. This important document is critical in the decision making of schools as they award scholarships and grants which are free money! If you need assistance in completing the FAFSA, unfortunately SRHS counselors are not the experts but the folks at NHHEAF (NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation) at https://www.nhheaf.org/ most definitely are. They will provide one on one assistance in completing the FAFSA if you reach out to them.

Finally, it is important to recognize and remember how challenging the winter months can be for some students. With limited ability to be out in the sun and the ongoing pressures and stress of academics, the winter months can sometimes be overwhelming for kids. If you notice your child seeming sad, withdrawn, more irritable or just off, please reach out to their counselor. We can direct you to resources which might be able to help and it is helpful for us to know so that we too can provide an extra check in to help everyone make it through until spring.

December 21 Will Be an Extended FLT Day
Dear Students, Teachers, and Parents/Guardians,

In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to stay up to date in all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on Friday, December 21, 2018. On this day, we will run four 60-minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students who have been assigned by a teacher to attend.

Students will be assigned an FLT session if they have an IWS on a summative, if they are failing the course, and/or if they are failing one or more competencies. Students who are not assigned to any FLT sessions by a teacher will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Thursday, December 20 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s grades, please contact your child’s teacher(s) by email (preferable) or by phone at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for December 21 will be as follows.

Please speak with your student(s) to ensure that they take advantage of this additional opportunity to address any missing work or failed competencies.

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
Hello Sanborn Community!

I hope everyone is staying warm. SoRock has just wrapped up our free Staying Connected with your Teen workshop through Teen Institute. Those who attended learned skills for increasing communication and decreasing conflict, ways to bond with their teen, strategies for preventing high-risk behaviors, how to involve your teen at home in problem-solving, decision making, and responsibility and more. If you missed the workshop but are interested in attending one in the future, please contact us for more information.

We will soon be wrapping out our winter session of the P.A.S.T.A Caregiver and grandparent support group with plans of a third session in the spring. The next meeting is on Monday 12/17 at 6pm at the Danville Community Center. We are currently looking for input from caregivers and grandparents in this position to help us prepare for, and possibly to attend, a meeting with one of our NH Senators in the New Year. The meeting will be focused on filling gaps and meeting the needs of this growing population for both caregivers and the children.

SoRock would like to acknowledge that the holiday season is a stressful one and is not necessarily joyful for everyone. Please remember self-care and stay connected to others. If you know someone who is struggling reach out and remind them, they are not alone. If you are in need resources, please visit
www.naminh.org.

SoRock is a community-based coalition with over a 25-year history of working collaboratively with federal, state and local organizations to help promote, support and sustain healthy choices for families in our communities. We do this by actively working to reduce and prevent alcohol, marijuana, prescription and other drug misuse.  SoRock relies on community engagement to be successful in it’s mission. Please visit our website sorocknh.org or follow us on social media @SoRockNH to stay up to date on prevention programming and events in the area.  If you would like to get more involved reach out to me at [email protected] or give me a call anytime at 603-642-3341 x 196

An Important Message From School Administrators:
PTO Clothing Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
